South Dakota cost and turnaround

A friend of mine who also is a member of this forum moved to South Dakota to deal with a family situation. He wrote to me the other day.

In SD, you go to the sheriff's office for a concealed carry-license.

Total cost and time ...

$10 and 17 minutes.

Funny thing is, South Dakota is not flooded with blood in the streets, shoot-outs over parking spaces, at sports venues, or any of the other horrors that permissive concealed carry is supposed to bring.

Even though Deadwood is in South Dakota.

Hello all,

It’s been a long time since I posted on this board. A lot has happened in the past year and my wife and I had to move to South Dakota (where she is from) to take care of her mother.

In any case I thought I would write you a review of how difficult it is to get a conceled carry license in South Dakota. Here is how it went:

Arrived in South Dakota August 9th

Got South Dakota Drivers License on August 11th

Went to the Sheriffs office last Friday (September 11th) and spent 17 minutes filling out a very short form.

Went back to the Sheriffs office today (Monday September the 14th) and gave them 10 dollars and received my permit. I was told I would have the actual plastic in less than 3 weeks but I could carry TODAY with the temporary permit.

It is sure going to get cold up here in a couple of months; but I LOVE South Dakota concealed carry laws!

I moved away from Iowa 20+ years ago to avoid the cold. But after seeing the pheasant hunting in SD, I may have to make a trip there some November or December. Sounds like the CC is pretty cool, also!

Well, Here is the update. I got my plastic in the mail today (9-24).

Went to sheriffs office on 9-11
Picked up my temp. permit (paper) 9-14
Recieved Actual plastic 9-24 (includeing a nice letter from the State AG--LOL)

Thats 13 days from asking to revieving!!

That is a whole lot closer to how it should be than what we're dealing with here.

Although South Dakota is pretty far north (straight north of Texas), it was the frontier at one time, and they appear to have retained the frontier spirit.

One thing that is significantly different there is the population density. South Dakota has about 10,000 fewer people in it than Travis County. South Dakota is about 77,000 square miles while Travis County is just over 1,000 square miles. People in South Dakota would need long range rifles just to hit each other.

I don't think population density per se is a factor. Israel has a higher population density in the northern areas than any U.S. state, but its violent crime rate is low. I use Israel as an example because it is the only other country with a substantial number of people permitted to carry weapons.

I've been convinced for a long time that disparity of wealth is the main factor in violent crime. When you have a large population of relatively poor and underemployed people side-by-side with a wealthier population, that poor population gives rise to drug-dealing and other illegal activity (during Prohibition it was bootlegging). Criminals can't take each other to court, so they resolve their disputes with violence. Some of them decide to prey on the wealthier population by robbery, burglary, etc.

There are some countries where most people about equally poor, such as China. They don't have significant violent crime. Probably as they continue develop a wealthy class, they will. The same thing happened in Russia after the Soviet Union dissolved.

[Re: Deadwood, SD] According to Michael Bloomberg...if the people of SD had listened to him and outlawed handguns, Wild Bill Hickock would still be alive, and two pair--aces and 8's--would just be two pair instead of "dead man's hand".
