Colorado nonresident firearm purchase

#1

Post by javechet »

I'm moving to Colorado in August to attend school. After completion, I have every intent of moving back to this Great State. While I'm there I wish to maintain my Texas residency. After some research, I understand that a student does not have to obtain a Colorado driver's license, but it is needed to purchase firearms. I also found out that I could apply for a state ID and maintain my nonresident status. What I do not know is if I can purchase firearms with the state ID. I have tried inquiring through other sources; I even emailed a gun shop in Colorado, but have not yet received a response. Does anyone have any insight on this, or could at least point me in the right direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To purchase a handgun, you must be a bona-fide resident of the state in which the purchase is made. You don't need a DL (nobody has to have a DL unless they're driving), but you must present proof of residency. A state-issued ID card that shows your address qualifies.

Someone recently reported that they weren't allowed to change their TX CHL address to an out-of-state residence until they sent a copy of their new state DL. I assume you could do the same with an ID card.

Thanks chabouk. That's the other thing; I didn't want to go through another CHL process. And I wasn't aware that you could have an out of state address on a Texas CHL.

Also, keep in mind that Colorado recognizes a Texas CHL only if you are a resident of Texas, i.e., the address shown on the license is a valid Texas address. Colorado is like Florida and Michigan in that you must be a resident of the state for them to recognize a reciprocal license. Note that IANAL and haven't stayed at a Holiday Inn Express recently.
