Why No Ohio Reciprocity?

Anyone know why no reciprocity with Ohio?

I moved to Texas from Ohio nearly 30 years ago, but my family still lives there. I visit regularly. My brother has an Ohio CCW. Seems like Texas would be no problem when they accept.... say.... Utah. Anyone have the scoop?

I believe it has to do with Texas CCW issuance to persons under 21. (Active or honorably discharged military)

More than likely because we will issue a license to someone who is 18-20 if they are active or prior military. Ohio you must be 21. This is the same reason that Washington state will not instate reciprocity with us.

I was afraid of that. I guess I am down to some out-of-state CCW to be able to carry there. Time to look for a Utah class in the DFW area I suppose.

Independently, my brother told me he was going to do Florida for himself to expand his Ohio-based carry ability to other places.

See if Ohio has reciprocity with Pennsylvania. You can get a Pennsylvania license through the mail without taking a class, and it's one of the quickest and cheapest.

I am originally from Ohio as well and still have family there. I took the Utah class from Crossfire and would highly recommend it to you. The class is fun, interesting, quick and painless - plus you get some range time. Utah seemed like the best bet in terms of expanding the number of states that you can carry in and overall cost ($10 renewal).

My family members that have their Ohio CCW also have Pennsylvania and can carry in nearly as many states as I can with Texas and Utah. As others have mentioned, the PA permit is easy to do through the mail.

I have heard two main arguments for Texas not recognizing Ohio and visa versa. First is the fact that we'll issue to those under 21 who meet certain guidelines. Secondly, Ohio will issue an "emergency permit" to someone who feels that they need the ability to protect themselves immediately.

Probably the laws of Ohio, Washington, etc., require that another state must have essentially the same requirements as that state or stricter to get reciprocity. IOW, the language of their law prohibits the authorities from making compromises.

I believe a few states have done this. This was my concern when the age limit for Texas CHLs was reduced to 18 for the military. For the DPS year 9/1/07 - 8/31/08, there were only 36 CHLs issued to people under age 21. However, 300,000 CHLs don't have reciprocity with at least Ohio and Washington, and possibly more if/when they take another look at Texas' CHL eligibility requirements. When considering changes to any law, it's critical to evaluate the potential consequences.

As an aside, I've heard from reliable sources that the alcohol restriction in Ohio is only for liquor, not places that serve only beer and wine. In addition the liquor has to be in the process of being consumed... go figure.
