Recommendations for .308
I have a hole in my arsenal that needs filling. My 2013 bonus gets paid on my birthday, which means that I might be able to siphon off a little for a purchase without raising too many eyebrows from the family accountant (aka My Wife). I have really had a longing for a nice long range .308 on an AR platform. I am looking for something that is really good, but not the best (i.e., think Kimber .45 instead of a Wilson .45). I simply don't have the skill or eyesight to make use of the very top of the line firearms, but I want a solid performer. Any recommendations out there?

Flexible and not yet determined, but I'd like to keep it under $2,500 without optics (though I might go higher if I really end up liking something, so don't hesitate to offer higher recommendations).Beiruty wrote:What is your budget?

I might have something you might like. However it is an all or nothing option. I'll pm details later. In short it is a DPMS LR-308 w/ extras.

For me $2500 puts some very nice bolt guns on the table. If you take the .308 out to 800 yards, a bolt gun will usually outperform a semi-auto accuracy-wise. For that money and AR type platform, I might go with a 6.5 Grendel or something that uses a normal AR lower receiver. As always, my opinion.

My husband's AR-10 is a Sig716 Patrol. I absolutely love that gun! Had an Eotech scope on it, and I think we paid right around $1800, IIRC. MSRP is $2200 without scope, but I just don't think we paid that much for it. Bought it at Cabelas before we got our FFL.

Re: Recommendations for .308
Might I ask why you want a .308 in a semi-auto?
Not that there are not good reasons, just wondering your reasoning for a semi vs bolt.
Also, what is long range for you/this gun? Are you looking for true 1K yd and out, or a more modest range due to limitations, like a range with a 500yd line?
Hunting, or just paper/steel?
Beyond that, the Colt 901 would be one I looked at pretty hard, in that price range.
Pretty good accuracy from what I have seen, and the ability to also run standard 5.56/.223 uppers as well.
Seem to be in the $2000-2400 range new, a bit less in used condition. May be cheap enough to add in an Aimpoint for some duties, and then the bigger scope for long range stuff...

Larue OBR or LMT MWS.
Then SCAR 17.

Re: Recommendations for .308
If I had to go semi auto, it might be the Colt LE 901-16S. I don't know what the LMT sells for, but an MSRP of $3500 kind of leaves me cold. I would definitely opt for one of George's masterpieces for that amount of $$$.

Re: Recommendations for .308
Late to the thread, but a heavy barreled Remington 700 mounted with a 5-20x50 scope in the $1500 price range will meet your budget restrictions, AND give you a keeper for life that you can hit anything with out to the limits of the cartridge. Alternatively, one of the better heavy barreled Savages will give you the same performance, but without the classic lines of the 700.
Or... explore a niche and buy a scout rifle/scope combination. If $2,500 is your budget, that gives you a LOT of leeway.
Finally, try an M1A, which you should be able to do well within that budget.

Re: Recommendations for .308
Thanks for all the advice and PMs. Unfortunately, we had a little damage to the house that is going to put this on the backburner for a while.

Also, what is long range for you/this gun? Are you looking for true 1K yd and out, or a more modest range due to limitations, like a range with a 500yd line? I am buying some property that hopefully will enable me to take 1k shots, but my skills are really much closer to 500. I hope to get better.

Re: Recommendations for .308
Sorry to hear about the house, and good luck with the property! I hope to have a similar "private range" in the future!
Id still rock a Colt in that price range.

If you are can skip the AR-10 platform, consider the FN-FNAR. see here " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
