I just bought a Remington 700 XCR Tactical in .223. I paired it with a Nikon M-223 4-16 X 42. Nice rifle and nice scope!!
I usually don't buy from BassPro, but this rifle was discounted pretty low, as it was the last one they had and the top of the receiver was dinged up around the scope mounting holes. Evidently, they had a phone in order for the rifle and they mounted the scope, and then the order was cancelled. Who ever mounted the scope, chipped the finish, but the threads were still good. This did not bother me too much as the scope mounts cover the blemishes.
I had them mount the scope, and bore site it. When I got it home it was definitely not on the level, and my bore site laser was not on the cross-hairs.
Rather than drive back to them, to correct it, I hung a plumb bob, and moved it to level.
I then put in my laser bore site tool, that looks like a cartridge and fits in the chamber, I could not get the cross-hairs on the dot and finally ran out of adjustment on elevation. When I took it out to shoot it and try to get it on paper, the rounds were hitting where the bore site tool indicated (about 3"low at 50 yards). I can not get it zero.
I have not ever had this problem with a new scope. I know you can shim the mounts, but is there a better way to accomplish this? I hesitate to take it back to Bass Pro, since they obviously did not know how to even mount it level! How can I re-gain some elevation adjustments?

Guns are like parachutes, if your ever in a situation that you need one and you dont have one, you'll probably never need one again.

Re: New Toy and Help needed
Burris makes scope rings that have bushings the rings to get good alignment with no stress on the scope tube. They also make eccentric bushings to address something like this. I used them on one of my silhouette rifles to address the problem of not being able to zero the scope. They worked great and I was able to put the dot the center of the travel (both vertically and horizontally) and have the 10 MOA bump that is needed to adjust the scope for the different distances. Hope this after trying them on that rifle, I have converted most of my rifles to those rings.

This! Burris Signature rings. Inserts bought separately up to .020". Maximum correction using .020" front and rear is .040". This set rotates from -.020" to +.020" for interim adjustments.LTUME1978 wrote:Burris makes scope rings that have bushings the rings to get good alignment with no stress on the scope tube. Burris can probably advise which inserts for your issue.

Re: New Toy and Help needed
Thanks guys!
I will look into these!
I bought Leupold base and rings, thinking they would be the best I could get. Do these Burris inserts fit inside the rings?
I guess I would have to raise the front if it is shooting low?

That sounds wrong. The rule is to move your rear sight the direction you want your impact to move.ddstuder wrote:Thanks guys!

If you raise the front you increase the angle between line of sight and bore axis, so the impact should be lower still.
The inserts only fit Burris Signature rings. If you tinker much, you'll find a use for the Leupold rings.
Or you could ask them to redo it and take your boresighter with you. I keep two small levels to confirm level, one on the rifle, one on the scope turrent.
Good luck,
Mike

Re: New Toy and Help needed
This is a guess, so take it as no more informed than such. But isn't that particular scope built/intended for an AR platform rifle with its higher sight over bore height? Could this be throwing off the poa/poi when using with a stand bolt-action platform rifle's lower sight-over-bore height?
Again just a guess.

Re: New Toy and Help needed
have you checked the simple things like making sure the rings and bases are mounted in the right spot? if one is taller than the other, is the taller one in back? or did they mount them in backwards? if they are designed with compensation built in for long range shooting then its possible. it is hard to tell from the photo and I havent heard you mention that you checked that so I thought I would throw it out there.

My understanding is that this scope is tuned more to the cartridge than the weapon. It sits pretty high on this rifle anyway.

I have measured the mounts and they are the same. As I stated, I did not mount the scope, BPS did. I am going to pull it all apart and mount it myself. I am no expert at scope mounting, but I believe I can do a better job than the flunkie at the BPS range. Do not ever let them touch your rifle or scope!!
I ordered a set of the Burris rings and a set of bushings that will change the POA from .005 to .020 MOA, but I will try to make these Leupold rings work first.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
