I'm considering a lever action rifle that shoots a pistol caliber round. This will mostly be for target shooting but may make it out with me on the occasional deer or hog hunt. I won't be shooting beyond 150 yards and could reload any of these calibers so ammo cost isn't a huge factor here.

Considering that I may be hog hunting with this rifle I wanted to get y'alls input as far as what to go with and what to avoid. Honestly I'm leaning towards the .45 Colt since I am more comfortable with that caliber pistol but still want to hear from others who may be more experienced than I.

I agree. On many levels it is the best choice; availability and cost of ammo being foremost. I do think a .45 Colt SAA and a Lever in .45 LC is a neat combination, but personally would still go with a .357/.38 Spcl.

I do have a .357 SA revolver.

Any idea which manufacturer you want? I've got my eye on a Henry Big Boy in .357. When I called the gun shop they told me Henry was behind on production because Sandy flooded the first floor of their factory. They said it would be about a month before they'd be back in stock.

I love the way the ones with the brass receivers look. However the only ones I have seen in .357 are the Henry's. I'm not way to crazy about the way they load though, I would prefer a loading gate.

I had the Henry. Loved the look but hated the loading tube. Also hated the weight of the octagon barrel. Like carrying around a 4ft crowbar!

So, I ended up selling to to a Forum member (who loves it) and I bought a new Rossi M92, 16" Stainless Model R92-56018. Price around 500-525 if you can find one.

Carlson1 just picked up a new one of the same model for a killer price. Maybe he will comment here as well.

Here is a picture of that model (not mine but same as mine).

Still got the "Bling" but with the standard loading gate and light enough to carry all day. I tried to find a Umberti but they are harder to find than the Rossi (and cost much more as well). The 1892 action is the strongest made in a lever gun. And there are many customizations that can be made to these Rossi's that turn them into a snot slick, light trigger carbine.

I'm also looking for a Rossi 92 16-inch stainless in .357 .... slim pickens

I did see a 20-inch blued 92 in .357 a week ago, but passed on it (really want the stainless)

Looking at the Rossi's, I could go case hardened.

only 16" is a 45 colt

oops....ur right (part numbers are close) 56018 for .357 and 57018 for .45 colt.

Sorry bout that. I just checked them to see if they actually had any in stock.....that is where I got mine about 6 Months ago. And that was after about a week of extensive searches online, they were the only one I found that had them in stock.

Well, the answer to the caliber question was solved pretty decisively for me yesterday by a pretty S&W 629. I'd been looking for a nice Blackhawk in .357/.44/.45 Colt for the single caliber to share between a nice Rossi and the pistol. Ah well, the S&W is very pretty (early 80s vintage)
