Best Scope for Ruger 10/22 Takedown (less than $100)

#1

Post by steveincowtown »

I have been a handgun guy for a long time, but I am know venturing into extending my rifle collection. Last weekend I went shooting with my brothers and we had more fun with his 10/22 than guns costing 10X as much.

I purchased a Ruger 10/22 Takedown for $319 (Gun, shipping, FFL) and need to purchase a scope for it. There is such a wealth of information on this board I hope someone can educate me on what I should be looking for in a scope. I will need to keep it under $100 for practical purposes....it is after all only a $300 gun. I plan on plinking and Squirrel hunting.

Any suggestions? I trust the opinions on this board about 100X more than all the other available on the interweb.

I bought my 10/22 about 20 years ago, laminate stock, SS barrell. I bought a Simmons 4x32 scope for less than fifty bucks, and it has been more than adequate for the 22. That was 20 years ago, but I'm sure you can still get a 4x32 for less than fifty bucks. My Ruger was only $108 when I bought it, unlike guns, the optics have improved in technology while the price point has gone down.

Interestingly, I also have a 10/22 TD and am also looking for a decent scope for around that price; also for squirrel hunting :-) The super sniper scope I took off my 308 was way too far magnification; great on paper but useless amongst the trees.

I've been doing quite a bit of research this last week and thought I'd pass some of that along; so far I've been having trouble seeing consistantly good reviews for any scope under $100 but juuuust over $100 there appears a few contenders; I've nailed it down to either the Burris Fullfield II 2-7x 35mm, which can be had for around $139 but gets stellar reviews;

...or the Redfield Revenge 2-7x 34mm, which is also $139 but for which there is a current $30 rebate offer;

http://www.opticsplanet.com/redfield-re ... scope.html

It seems like these are great scopes and quite a bit better than the sub-$100 scopes I had found; take a look and see what you think. And if you see a scope that gets good reviews at a better price let me know also so I can consider it for my TD !!

The Mueller APV seems well recommended but for me is a little too large for what I want on my 10/22;

I am planning to use Warne QD low mount scope rings so I can remove the scope when I break the rifle down.

By the way - what kind of groups do you see with your TD ? With Rem HP golden bullets, mine groups the first 3-5 rounds very nicely then starts opening up presumably due to barrel heating to like a couple of inches at 50 yards. After waiting 20-30mins it will group tightly again. I've tightened the locking collar as per the user guide, and played around with it some but still see the same gradual spreading.

Hope that helps, or at least is a useful sharing of research...

Check out the Nikon Prostaff Rimfire. I think it's about $100 sfter the rebate. I put on on a CZ 452. Very nice bang for the buck.

None yet, it is still in the mail! I will post after I sight it in though.

Excellent suggestion on the Redfield. My brothers gun has this scope, I was just hoping to get something a little cheaper.

BSA Sweet 22 hands down, it is made specifically for rimfire rifles. Greybeard and myself put together 4 10/22's to be used for Appleseed events and this scope was fantastic. Held zero since the day it was sighted in and won't break the bank...

+1 for BSA, dirt cheap and they work. I have one on my 10/22 and another on a 243 WSSM, if it can hold zero on a super short mag (and it does) you can bet it will hold up on a rimfire.

I had the Sweet 17 and if the Sweet 22 is anywhere near as good, you won't regret it. It's what I will be putting on my 10/22TD as well.

This is my first scope so I cant really comment technically on how great it is but I had purchased another scope at Walmart for 30 bucks that had great reviews but it was too long (12+ Inches Barska brand http://www.walmart.com/ip/Barska-CO1153 ... r/15819410" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) for the 10/22 takedown I own so I found another on Amazon for around $60 " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It has red and green illumination. Seems good as I said but havent really had it long enough to test it.

Just got through putting a 10/22 TD together for my wife, put the BSA Sweet 22 scope along with an extended mounting rail for eye relief, I have found that the rail they supply will not move the scope out far enough for us to quickly get on a target. Also added the extended mag release and auto bolt release. They are all simple modifications and really add to the functionality of the rifle.

I've got the BSA on my Sig522 and couldn't be happier.
