Well...I bit the 5.56 x 45 bullet

Finally decided to go the AR15 route. However, I can not afford to get one that I would really like! After much thought, and after watching several videos, I decided to build it myself.

I ordered a stripped lower from CMMG and a set of Bushmaster lower parts from Brownells. Got the lower parts to day and the lower is scheduled to arrive at my FFL tomorrow. The "Critial Tools Kit" from Brownells was out of stock, so I need to find a magazine vise block locally, or order it on speedy delivery.

The upper? Have not decided yet. One thing at a time, and I figure this will take me several months to be able to afford to put it together.

Think this is going to be a lot of fun!

Keep us posted.
I'll be starting my first build as soon as my Spike's lower comes in.
I'm building a 6.5 Grendel.

NICE! I think my first AR will be in 5.56 just because it's right, but my 2nd AR will definitely be a 6.5 grendel after shooting OldCannons Grendel. That was a sweet, sweet gun.

Slap that onto a $99 lower and you now have a sub-$500 AR-15. That's an awesome bargain!

re: magazine vise block
if you are just assembling a lower you don't be putting much force on the parts. I've take scrap wood and shaped it accordingly to fit fairly well in the mag well and chucked it up in the vise.
sometimes it just isn't necessary to spend money

For my stripped lower assembly the only tools you need are a set of punches (go get them for $10 a Lowe's) and a $5 Armeror wrench. An extra set of hands would be nice too, but not required.

:iagree: I took an old, junked steel 20 round straight magazine pulled the spring and follower slid a piece of lumber into it to keep from crushing it in the vise and twisting. Vola! Instant vise block!

Well, I got the lower together and it looks just like the picture... ;-)

I think the next step will be to get the buffer tube and a sliding stock. (One step at a time). I feel a little sigh of relief having the lower in my possession since I think our gun rights are about to undergo a big battle. If Obama gets back into office...shudder.... :cryin

I am thinking of ordering another one just so that I have two of them in case it suddenly becomes very hard to get a lower for one of them automatic assault weapons of mass destruction.
