My Labor Day AR Build

I finally managed to devote the appropriate attention to the AR parts that have been patiently waiting in my safe. No pressing honey-dos. Corporate holiday. Gustav bumming the Gulf Coast.

I like the results.

Stag Arms stripped lower, Rock River Arms LPK with National Match trigger, upgrade grip, collapsible stock.

Upper is a RRA midlength with chrome lined barrel, flat top with flip up BUIS.

I have a Bushy upper for the next one that I bought off a forum member.

Two more lowers are waiting. I need to order some more stuff.

BTW, I recall reading o some thread about a AR source in the Houston area that was quite popular but did not find anything in the rifle section. Was it SOGArmory????

I have a stripped lower I bought at a recent gun show, and I've been searching the Internet for parts . . . the RRA LPK seems the best choice for that part of tbe build, but there are almost too many combinations of upper and buttstock to choose from. (And the PRICES being asked for some of the "boutique" brands . . . )

How do you like that CAA buttstock? More comfortable/sturdier than the standard M4 collapsible stock?

I was looking at the Vltor E-mod, but from the prices, most places seem to think they're not plastic, but soild gold (OK, silver) so unless I can figure out how to get dealer price from Brownell's, I may just be looking for an alternative.

The RRA follks are easy to deal with but they are busy. My upper took awhile to build. You have to get in a long line. Their LPKs are reasonable and the National Match trigger feels good but the proof will be in the squeezing off some rounds downrange.

I have not shot it yet but the CAA stock appears adequate for the 5.56/.223 cartridge. If I was shooting the 308 I might look at something different. Those Vitors did not entice me. They looked cool, maybe too tact-i-cool. YMMV.

Keep us posted on what you decide. Have you visited AR15.com? You can spend a long time reading posts there and find answers to a lot of questions.

Those grips look nice and comfortable. Are they hogue?

The grip has Rock River Arms logo on it so the mfr is a mystery. I bought it from RRA along with the parts kit, stock, and upper to finish out the rifle.

It is pretty comfy in the meathook though. The sausage fingers fit it nicely.

Is it rubber? If it is it's the same Hogue grip I've got on mine, mine also has the RRA logo on it, I think RRA only offers 4 different types of grips, a regular plastic, a Hogue, an Ergo one (looks funky), and Ergo Tactical (super funky looking)

Anyone know how much it would cost to build a plane jane M-16A2 20" USMC issue style build?

I want the 1:7" Chrome bore..but everything else to be stock, no frills, no spills, just M-16A2 like the one I carried in the Marines

Have you shot on it yet? I just shot my new AR-15 o about an hour ago, and it was a blast! The grip was great on it, but it was the first time I've shot an AR-15, so I was just expecting to hit the target (I'm by no means a great shot) and I ended up doing much better than I thought.

I have never shot an AR either. Waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy back when I was in the Navy we had M-14s as our repel boarders rifles. Naturally, me being a Texican I was on the repel boarders detail as a rifleman.

It is, of course, proper to note that the likelihood of needing to repel boarders in a nuclear submarine is slim and none. Once the hatches were sealed it was a difficult task to enter the sub.

I did mange to be called topside once with my rifle when tied up next to a tender on the Cooper River at the Charleston Naval Weapons Station during a bomb threat on the tender. Myself and another sonarman who hailed from Indiana were hunkered down in the BRA-8 radio buoy bay for cover. We were taking bets as to whether or not we could shoot a labrador retriever in a fisherman's boat about 500 yards out in the river.

The Duty officer, the despised chief engineer, was topside and severely chastized us for not taking the bomb threat seriously.

We told him just as soon as he pointed out said bomber we would most certainly dispatch him with extreme prejudice.

I don't have a clue. It does a=sound like you need to do it and give us a report and a picture.

20-25K for the M-16.

Mine was an absolute dream to shoot, I had just been shooting my .22's and my Glock 19, when I switched over to that, so it took me a bit to get used to the recoil with the stock I have, I took about 10 shots of it, pulled out my dad's old Winchester 94, I figured out why he hates the rifle, it's recoil gave me a bruise (we should probably get stronger shoulders and a half decent recoil pad) Then I swapped back over to my AR-15, let off a couple more rounds, told my mom she could shoot a round off if she wanted to, we loaded up 5 rounds in a mag, she sat down, shot one, then finished off all 5 I ended up shooting maybe 30 rounds? I shot just enough to get a decent feel, but still want to go back to the range asap.
