CLEO NFA sign off in Carrollton/Denton County?
Interested in getting an SBR. I live in north Carrollton, which is Denton County. Anyone know if they are NFA friendly? Do I have to go to Carrollton PD, or could I go to someone in Denton County (I'm assuming DC would be more willing than CPD). I know about the whole trust thing, but with the looming restrictions there, I dont want to go through all the paper work only to be stone walled.

Just call up the Carrollton chief and politely ask and see where you get.
I've heard the new county sherif has been on record as being opposed to nfa items so it might not net good results
Also certain judges can sign

Why not just setup a trust?

I hadn't heard about the new sheriff. That's unfortunate. The previous one said he approved all unless he knew there was a specific reason to deny one. There was an article a while back about a guy in Lewisville getting busted for illegal guns, while also having some legal NFA one's, and the Lewisville chief was known for only approving stuff like that for people he knew. He did, however, say that he would forward the ones for people he didn't know on to the sheriff. IIRCrentz wrote:Just call up the Carrollton chief and politely ask and see where you get.

My only hope is for my local PD chief to approve since I'm in Dallas county if I ever want to get an NFA item.

Last I heard trusts would likely need Cleo sign off soon anyways. Didn't want to go through that process if I couldn't get sign off.Syntax360 wrote:Why not just setup a trust?

Because Obama just passed Executive Orders that now requires every member of the Trust to do fingerprints, pictures, and CLEO signoffs. There was a 90 day grace period for comments to the BATFE but I think that is almost over. By the time he gets a trust set up it will definitely be over and probably be policy.Syntax360 wrote:Why not just setup a trust?

Could be wrong, but I don't think it's an executive order; I think it's a rule proposed by the BATFE, with the comment period ending, as you noted, on Monday: link to the Federal Register entry describing Docket No. ATF 41P.TheDude wrote:Because Obama just passed Executive Orders that now requires every member of the Trust to do fingerprints, pictures, and CLEO signoffs. I admit I really don't know much about this or all its ramifications. Haven't seen much discussion about it, either.

Sounds like we need to pass a "shall sign" law for CLEOs during the next legislature if a person is eligible for owning an NFA item. Of course there would need to be a personal monetary penalty (tab not picked up by the city or county if the CLEO refuses to sign) and a release of liability when the CLEO does sign. To quote my youngest "I'm just say'n".

You are correct. I did a little more research and although the media reported it as a EO it is apparently not.Skiprr wrote:Could be wrong, but I don't think it's an executive order; I think it's a rule proposed by the BATFE, with the comment period ending, as you noted, on Monday: link to the Federal Register entry describing Docket No. ATF 41P.TheDude wrote:Because Obama just passed Executive Orders that now requires every member of the Trust to do fingerprints, pictures, and CLEO signoffs. Can the OP give us an update? Curious if the Carrollton Chief signed off or not.

Carrollton's chief Rex Redden is VERY gun friendly.
My dad and him were coworkers at McKinney PD when I was growing up.
Call up his office, leave him a message or email him, and Im sure he'll get to you.

Chief Lee Howell of Denton County will sign off. I sent him an email asking back in Oct 2013 and this was his reply:
Mr. Chan,
As long as Federal and Texas law will allows, I will continue to sign ATF forms after due diligence of checking the background of applicants for NFA weapons transfers.
Thank you for your inquiry.
Lee Howell
Chief of Police
Denton, TX

Point of reference here, Lee Howell is the Chief of Police for the City of Denton. William Travis is the Sheriff of Denton County.
What about Constables, they are elected by precinct. Would they be considered a CLEO for their Precinct?

No, their signatures are not accepted. Read 6.2.4airbornecpa wrote:Point of reference here, Lee Howell is the Chief of Police for the City of Denton. William Travis is the Sheriff of Denton County.
