Gunsmith Recommendation
I need to find a gunsmith conversant with Marlin lever action rifles. My brother discovered in the tack shed at my parents/familys Kyle Canyon summer place, a Glenfield/Marlin Model 30A in 30-30 Winchester. Purchased by my Pop for a saddle gun in '72 from Western Auto for $109.95! He never liked it, said the barrel was too long, so it's been sitting in an old plastic gun case for for 40 years. There is some light pitting on the top of the receiver and top of the barrel, chamber and bore look okay but the action is really gummy(ah the smell of old Hoppes) so I'm looking for someone to do a resto. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

Re: Gunsmith Recommendation
Are you talking a restoration or simply cleaning it up to shoot. If the sentimental value is such that you want to make it look new I understand. If it's simply for a shooter some brass or bronze wool will take care of any surface rust. A restoration will not really add a great deal of value to the rifle. You should be able to disassemble enough to clean it, (lever and side plate ) with some solvent to get the gum out. Visit Marlin Owners for help. There's a section just for 336's which is what a Model 30 is. http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/Andrew wrote:I need to find a gunsmith conversant with Marlin lever action rifles. Re: Gunsmith Recommendation
Thanx, No, we want to do a resto for the oldest grandson's birthday in July. Yes i know the 336/30 are the same piece, currently have a 1895G in .45/70 gubmint for my truck gun. No side plate, by the way, pull lever and bolt, couple of 3 screws and the bottom plate comes out and drops the carrier. Just hoping for a good reccomentaion without the need to join another board.

Re: Gunsmith Recommendation
Without knowing the general location where you are looking for a smith we can't give you specific advice, but I can give some generic advice. I would lookup the nearest SASS (Single Action Shooters Society) club and give them a call as they tend to use smiths who know these guns very well.
How do you explain a dog named Sauer without first telling the story of a Puppy named Sig?

Re: Gunsmith Recommendation
Location isn't a concern, we've got enough lead time to ship.
Re: Gunsmith Recommendation
I know of a good gunsmith in Luling.IF that would help.
