I don't know what would make it heavier, except the synthetic stock versus wood. The wood on the cheap 870 is not dense.

My wife and I have shot many thousand rounds through our 870s with no sign of wear except needing to clean the choke tubes occasionally.

Speaking of chokes, what does it come out of the box with? Does it have a fixed or screw-in choke?

What kind of sights does it have?

Mr.72, if it has a screw-in choke, you can see a bright steel ring inside the black metal of the barrel. It will have two slots in it, which receive the tool that unscrews it.

It could be unchoked. That is not unusual in shotguns intended for short-range use. I would expect that if the designers cost-reduced the piece.

Austinrealtor, I've looked into swapping barrels. By the time you get through with messing around with different magazine sizes, you might as well buy two shotguns.

Also, many people want to put rifle sights on tactical shotguns, which are inappropriate for clay targets or bird hunting.

H&R/NEF is also Marlin, all owned by Remington.

This shotgun will not take 870 barrels without modification, but my understanding from reading up about it is that with some modification, it can be made to take 870 barrels. Most other 870 accessories will fit.

They are cheap :) But figure about a pound heavier than a Remington 870. My wife thought it was Real Heavy.

The gun is heavier due to the machined steel receiver, rather than the lighter receiver of the 870.

Barrels are proprietary to NEF, H&R, & one other brand (?).
870 barrels do not fit this gun.

The longer barreled field gun is right around $200. Now, I'm thinking about the field gun.....

Hmm. This manual covers the entire PP lineup. The article references a 28" bbl. I think any information in that article refers to models other than the $159.00 Protector. It has an 18.5" bbl and no choke at all that I can find. Am I missing something?

I read that this particular Pardner had an IC choke. That doesn't necessarily mean a removable choke tube.

My Winny 1300 Defender has a cylinder bore. At home defense ranges, whether 18.5" or 20", cylinder and IC are pretty much interchangeable.

There's no choke, or threads for one, that I can see, either. In fact teh hole and base of the sight bead are "right there."

My digital calipers are buried in boxes right now. Many years ago I was taught that if a dime almost went in the opening, it was full choke. A dime will go in with room to spare.

Yeah I read the manual and examined the gun last night and I don't think it has any choke.

I will break it down, clean & lube it my way, then take it out and shoot it this weekend. Gotta find some reduced-recoil 00 buck to take to the range. I have a house full of tall&thin females that will appreciate lower recoil :)
