What type of snake is this? Pretty sure it's poisonous by looking at belly scales.

If its grey and small about 8-10 inches probably harmless I found many like that around my house they seem to like moist places like gardens, under a pile of grass.

not really a grey more of brownish / copper color i would say -- thinking a baby copperhead but im not sure -- i know the belly scales are one long row, which heard that is one way to tell poisonous from non poisonous cause non poisonous has two rows but again im not sure

edited: just trying to identify it so in case one of the dogs ends up getting bite or little niece who plays out in the yard a lot

Brown Earth Snake aka Rough Earth snake. Non-poisonous, They rarely grow to more than a foot in length. They are commonly found in flower beds, gardens and along slabs. They eat mainly earthworm but also grubs. Look at the eyes, slit pupils are poisonous round pupiled snakes are not poisonous. Except for the Coral Snake but they are easily identified by their color. the old adage for Coral Snakes - "Red touching black venom lack, Red touching yellow kill a fellow." BTW is he going in your TV dinner?

yea i knew on eyes but the head is crushed and cant see, think one of the dogs stomped it to death -- with the response makes me feel little better -- few yrs ago found and killed a few copperheads with couple of them being pretty big so was thinking maybe they were coming back

I thought it was a common rat snake. I have them all over the place. From gray to this medium brownish color.

All poisonous snakes have eyes like cats and triangular heads. No other snakes do. That's how you can tell if it's poisonous.

Coral snake. Doesn't have a triangular head. Big trouble if bit. Personally, it doesn't matter to me, as I'm alarmed at all of 'em.

It is sooo much easier than that... Forget everything that you may have heard about how to ID venomous snakes by their scales, eyes, head shape, or anything else.

Venomous snakes native to Texas come in only four varieties:

1. Anything with a rattle is venomous and should be destroyed with an unrighteous zeal.
2. Cottonmouth / water moccasin - impossible to misidentify... short, stumpy, thick, dark brown or black colored irritated snake from the hottest regions of hades.
3. Copperhead - again, impossible to misidentify, nothing else looks like it with the tan / light brown body color with dark brown / copper splotches.
4. Coral Snake - Red touches yellow, kill the fellow, red touches black..... kill the fellow.

Anything else is harmless.

I'd love to take a look at it but the image isn't there. Can you describe it?
