Some organization (probably anti-2A) has put together stats on the relative "peace" of all 50 states.
I suspect they are anti's due to "availability of small arms" as one of the criteria.

Maine was determined to be the most peaceful state in the country. One of the 5 factors that caused them
to come out #1 was that Maine has the lowest number of LEO's per capita, in the US.

Texas was 44th. Louisiana was dead last, determined by the study to be the least peaceful state.

Of 61 metropolitan areas rated in the story, #57 (almost the least peaceful) was Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown.

I don't necessarily agree with this report's findings, but simply put it out for discussion.

This had to have been written by the publishers of the L.L. Bean catalog......for people who buy all their clothes from L.L. Bean.......thinking that if they dress the part, people will think they own a multimillion dollar home on Penobscot Bay.

as long as Availability of firearms is on the list Texas will never break top 20. Also incarceration rate is stupid to have. Especially after they noted that a decrease in violent crime would come with an increase in prison violence. Another example of choosing the outcome then selecting how to get there. I must say though I have always wanted to live in Maine. I think lobster would be cheaper if instead of having it shipped to me I should just ship myself to the source

Those folks making the rankings can live in anyone of those places. They don't have to live in Texas.

According to that logic, New York and Illinois should be in the top 20?

My favorite comment so far on an Alabama website: "This study simply lists the order in which all of the U.S. states will succumb to Central Planning".

I haven't been there myself, but I understand it's a wonderful country. North European people are some of the nicest and most resourceful people you'll meet. The climate is nothing to write home about, but otherwise I see nothing wrong with Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, or Finland.

Between the Air force and civilian life I lived in northern Maine for about 17 years. In fact we used to joke about having to go south to find yankees! They have a motto "the way life ought to be" or something close to that. It generally is a very easy going rural state. I would estimate there are guns in about 75% of the homes.
When I moved back to Texas in 05 I was seeing an awful lot of Massachusetts/Connecticut/Canadian money buying up large portions of the state and a lot of younger "Maniacs" going south in search of greener pastures. The economy away from the coastal areas was deteriorating rapidly. I had to move back because I could no longer take the -20 to -40 actual January temps and 36 -40 inch winter snow storms. The short summers were beautiful with the exception for the black flies and mosquitoes. Southern Maine was not as extreme weather wise, but the Massachusetts influence was very noticeable. :grumble

My comment was about the climate. Mind you it has been around 45 years ago that I was there. Summers are not bad although you will need to wear a sweater at times.

Trust me, you do not want to be there in winter.

Vermont (#2) allows concealed carry without a license. Both Utah (#5) and Washington (#7) have pretty good concealed carry laws. One of the things 9 of the top 10 most "peaceful" states seem to have in common is a mostly homogenous population. The exception is Hawaii.

Iceland does indeed have terrible winters...and very short, barely warm summers. Great scenery, as long as you can not be upset by the general lack of trees. The Icelanders are a very homogenized group of folks...though that has changed some small amount. And yes, the young, single guys in my unit did seem to enjoy themselves, BTW.
