Yeah, I also like how they noted the basement in San Antonio.

The tongue-in-cheek-ness of it.Oldgringo wrote: What's funny about this?
They are poking a bit of fun at people who don't 'get' guns, apparently. It reads like a hysteria-inducing news item ("Man With A Gun Seen In Town!!!"), yet it is just a guy doing what gun-guys do."Looking back, it was only a matter of time before something like this happened," Marshall said. "Bryon pretty much comes in here every Tuesday."

The Onion's brand of humor can be very dry - they don't often telegraph the punch line. They just go along as if they're a real news outlet and this is a real story. That's part of the humor - that they seem so serious and matter-of-fact about something so completely preposterous.

Ordinarily, I think sarcasm is the highest form of humor. Not being familiar with "The Onion", I reckon I just didn't get it....again.

I agree, I love sarcastic humor, but not knowing of "The Onion" I didn't catch it, I thought it was a misguided article.Oldgringo wrote:Ordinarily, I think sarcasm is the highest form of humor. Not being familiar with "The Onion", I reckon I just didn't get it....again.

Y'all should look into The Onion. Very funny stuff. Sorta Mad Magazine meets SNL "Weekend Update" meets "The Daily Show" and the "The Colbert Report" .... but even that doesn't truly describe it. I've been reading it off and on for years, but what always sticks in my mind is that they were the first media outlet that actually made me chuckle a bit after 9/11. Don't remember exactly how long after the attacks this was (a few weeks probably), but I'd been glued to the 24/7 television news coverage and a bit of depression was setting in. Then I opened TheOnion.com and they had this "Big Huge New Event" type "coverage" of 9/11 (I won't repeat the tagline they used, as it's not fit for 9-year-olds) and it was just enough to make me chuckle and realize I needed to back away from all the media coverage and get back to regular life. Some friends even said it was "too soon" and disrespectful, but they hit the funny note at just the right time for me to step back into reality and stop sinking deeper into anxiety over all the horrible news.

Although the article caused no emotional response within me at all, I can logically understand why it would be humorous.

The Onion has often been mistaken for a serious new outlet. In the early days (and still once in a great while) it got quoted in the main stream media. I think the most famous was the (fake) interview with J. K. Rowling in which she states (along with much more) that the Harry Potter books were gateway material to lure kids into Satanism. It got picked up by a lot of fundamentalist web sites.clbryant1981 wrote:I agree, I love sarcastic humor, but not knowing of "The Onion" I didn't catch it, I thought it was a misguided article.Oldgringo wrote:Ordinarily, I think sarcasm is the highest form of humor.
