Luckily no one got hurt. I wouldn't want to be in the parents' shoes for letting the little hooligan get their hands on the pistol. :rules:

I have guns all over my house. I sure hope they don't decide to go on a shoot out all by themselves. Maybe the gun didn't like being trapped inside the desk and tried to shoot it's way out. On a serious note: Parents of small children, or any age child, should know where their guns are and keep them out of reach, locked up, whatever you have to do to keep them out of the hands that don't belong on them. Parent's, it's time to know: where are your guns?

Answer: Careless parents who do not secure their guns well enough, which allows curious 3rd graders to just go fetch it out of a nightstand drawer....or something to that effect.

I wonder how many States have what we have in PC 46.13 "Making a Firearm Accessible to a Child"? :mad5

How ? ...in a backpack. Ban backpacks. :rules:

I am always amazed when I read of these types of incidents.

If this child were educated on proper handgun safety it is way more likely that this incident could have been avoided. I have taught (and continue to teach) my 8yr about handgun safety and I know for a fact she would never do this (also she would not have access to one). It is sad that parents will be so negligent with something so precious (kids, not the guns) ;-)

+1 To me, education is just as important as securing them!!!

Exactly the point I was trying to make! Thanks! Gun safety has to be taught....it cannot be legislated. :tiphat:

Failure to educate is the reason that in my dad and grandpa's days we used to be able to hand a 7-year old a rifle and send him out to the barnyard or pasture to fetch dinner ... but we can't nowadays because they wander off looking for happy meals.
