i haven't been to one in a couple of decades .
the last i remember was a dark musty hole in the wall where the guy at the counter acted like
you were there to steal something .

well , today i stopped in one and to my pleasant surprise it was large , well lit , and the ladies running it were
very friendly and helpful.

i ended up purchasing a "shooters bag" to carry all my gear to the range .
i noticed they had a lot of well made clothing , boots , backpacks , ect.

i did notice however , there's a bunch of stuff that is made in China .
i didn't like that too much .

anyway , do any of you frequent Army surplus stores ?

I use to all the time, but I haven't been to one in 15 to 20 years. There's one not far from me that I've been meaning to check out....

the one i was in today had a bunch of various police equipment .
i was looking hard at a knight stick .... for novelty purposes only .

Colonel Bubbie's in Galveston has a bunch of stuff.

There was a time when an army surplus store was just that.....a store that sold real army surplus goods. And they were in plentiful supply.

What we see now is mostly sporting goods accessories stores, that call themselves a army surplus store. They have nothing to do with army surplus, except a few olive drab or cammy colored clothes, made for the commercial market. And most of what they carry, like USA1 said, is stuff made in countries EXCEPT the United States.

There is ONE store that I know of in my area, that survived that transition. Omaha Surplus in Ft.Worth is still a genuine Army Surplus Store. It's been there for as long as I can remember....at least back to the 60's. I go in about once or twice a year and get something from them. Check them out:

A couple of friends and I went to a surplus store a week or two ago to see if we could pick up some bug-out gear but all we found was stuff made in China. Mostly Condor branded items. Although the name is avian in nature like Eagle, it is nowhere near the same quality of gear. It was good to peruse the aisles and compare and contrast different items, though. Unfortunately, I suppose that once I do get around to buying some gear, it will have to be online.

I was actually just there today and they are still kicking. Smells VERY musty but it really always has...more of a musty moldy smell now. They still have a lot of stuff though.

You're not kidding! It's sad really...

National Outdoors here in san antonio (used to be National Army surplus) used to have great things, now it's just an outlet for scrubs and work clothes.

I bought a couple of web rifle slings there. Both were rotten and came apart after a few rounds.

Salt and humidity has to have taken a toll on his inventory.

Did uou happen to see if Colonel Bubbie's has any ammo cans?

I am after a couple of 50 cal cans and was going to head on down there today but I allowed people to convince be it was closed down since the old owner had passed away.

I did see a few .50 cal ammo cans but they might need some TLC if you buy them. Green OD spray paint, (1 each) should do the trick.

It is definitely NOT closed down.

Command Post over on Beltway 8 and Southwest Fwy has a variety of ammo cans, not sure if they have any .50 cal. It weems to be a reasonable place, a mix on new and surplus, but not like some of the older ones.
