Used to drive by/to Atsugi NAS a bunch and would almost always think about MacArthur landing there for the first time before the official surrender ceremony.

Ditto, and me neither. It really makes you appreciate the complexities of surrendering one military to another when spread over such vast distances. The formal surrender right in Tokyo Bay was pretty spectacular. The might of the Pacific Fleet safely at anchor in Japanese home waters, documents signed on the deck of a battleship, with waves of combat aircraft flying overhead -- it was an awesome show of force and a scene we'll never see the like of again.
