Love Bassnectar!! Nice to see another fan on here.
Absolutely. I love most of the stuff they do. Don't know if you caught their remix on Breaking Bad, but here it is: best listened to with headphones cranked to 11.

If I ever get to San Antone, I need to give you a call. I think we'd get along. :coolgleamA:

Wow, great topic. Depending upon your age really controls here. I, for example, am 40-ish and there's parcels of time that are engrained in me. Take for example the 70's: my family did a lot of camping in a travel trailer with other faimilies in great national parks in Canada. I recall the AM radios always playing pretty tame stuff that everyone knew and sang along with, such as Gordon Lightfoot (Ex. 'Sundown')

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8rR7E6NfY4

....or music from generations before that made you wanna grab a pint and howl away the night (ex. 'Excursion around the bay')

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ie771sDcEL0

Later on, you start to develop your own style, and I started making my own mix tapes. It was the 80's, so it was more about metal than it was about Rap and hiphop for me. Iron Maiden was king for me, and my favorite album still to date is Powerslave. "Aces High" with all that WWII film still gives me the willies.

Boy those guys could play a riff. After that, I went a bit more cerebral with bands like Queensryche and classical music. I still like Tchaikovsky and Handel and play Queensryche "Operation LiveCrime" from time to time...

Nothing beyond the 80's and early 90's really sticks too much. I suppose that it's after that point that I pretty much grew up (out of high school/finishing up University) and it was more about making my way rather than enjoying life in general. Oh well. At least now I can afford to crank it up on some nice gear.

Cheers!

Nice media set up!

For another one I like a lot: As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I played Trumpet through Jr High and High school.

My ensemble group played Canadian Brass's arrangement of Pachabel's Canon in D one year. I know a lot of people have used the song for various important events. I love it for a different reason. There was another kid in my grade who played Trumpet. He was a phenomenal natural musician. He was always first chair, and I was always second. We both ran cross country together and were into old cars so we were great friends...but he was always the better Trumpet player, so he always got the solos, etc.

This arrangement, much like the original, gives the 2nd string violin (or trumpet in my case) a LOT of great stuff to play. It wasn't written like most arrangements geared towards Jr high or high school ensembles where 2nd string gets lousy, boring parts....so I had a ton of fun playing it, even as 2nd trumpet.

And if I'm going to bring that video up, I have to share a funny cellist rant on Pachabel. Every time I hear this guy's rant on Canon in D I crack up. It also makes the Tuba players actions in the previous video make a lot more sense if you're a musician. :smilelol5:

Listening to Canon in D got me in a sentimental mood:

Here's a group of songs that I listened to growing up (my parents always had music going on the house and car....I still do now that I have my own house). I liked the songs as a kid. Now that I'm a little older and understand the meaning behind the songs, I like them even more.

Otis Redding "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay"
I listened to this song on the way to work this morning.
Otis Redding was another great singer who died far too young.
He didn't really get famous until after his death.

Lonnie Donegan's skiffle music was an inspiration for many 60s musicians like the Beatles.

Sara Watkins - The Ward Accord
a simple track, but it's the simple ones that are usually the most beautiful.
