That's pretty cool. I was in during the VEAP years. Talk about the most pathetic "go to school" incentive EVER! There were so many restrictions and limitations that it was a complete waste of the money that you had to put in.

DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I contributed the maximum allowed at the time $2,500.00. Uncle Same matched it 2:1. Removing all of the restrictions and limitations it was still impossible to go school and get a degree with $7,500.00. Also, at the time I left the service (Nov 1988) you were not eligible for any other government education assistance (grants or loans) if you received benefits under VEAP.

When I got out, in 1970, I returned to my "old" job at the phone company, and was put back into the company's 6 year "wage progression" plan which acts kind of like an apprenticeship. Initially I was declined for GI Bill because they didn't recognize it as an apprenticeship, and then they changed their minds and decided it was OK, but since the company had been kind enough to step me through the progression as if I was there, while I was gone, they declined based on the fact that I was already almost at the top of the scale anyway. I fought with them about it for a while more and then gave up. They kept changing their story, yes I was qualified, but, but, but . . .

I wonder if I could claim it retroactively now.

Yup. I cashed out my contributions and slogged out my bachelors degree on my own, with the help of a couple Pell grants.

Yup, my kids have taken advantage of it (or currently are). Me, however, I was a hostage in California in my teen years. Why do you think I enlisted?

Kind of. Not to try to sound too defensive, but the purpose of the bill was to reeducate vets so that they could reenter the workforce. I can only assume that the cutoff was set because those over 60 are considered to be approaching retirement age.
