IMO 2012 goes in the same file that Y2K went in. I’m more worried about hyperinflation and our economy. This article from Forbes leads me to think stocking up now can save me money later:

I can remember the 70’s when I believe the President froze prices because of runaway inflation.
Living in Hutto, well it seems the power goes out during every rain and Hermine had us cooking with a Coleman stove for two days. Not knowing when the power would come back on was a pain. I can only imagine what would happen if the power stayed off for a week. Would there be looting? Would I be forced to protect my family and property? Who knows? But I’m prepared. I'm glad I don’t live in places where they will riot over professional sports but society does seem to be more volatile now days.
I would love to be self sustaining. Two years ago I bought 83 acres in the South Park of Colorado. I have a 20 x 10 cabin on it, a lake ½ mile away and big horn sheep eating outside my door. The cabin is a work in progress as it’s not cost effective for utilities to be available, however, the wind never stops there and my neighbors all have solar panels and turbines. I was working on a rain/snow containment system when I was informed that all water that falls on my land belongs to the state of Colorado??? Slight snag there be it’s a small tax to catch the water. The cabin is a nice place to vacation and I love panning for gold, fishing and a bit of hunting but it would also work as a last resort.
In all, the Boy Scout motto is correct be prepared and I agree with the Annoyed man, don’t go overboard with it.

Yup didn't that happen with the Mayan calendar the first time? They said it was ending years ago. Then it didn't and they said OK it will be another date. Now just recently they said ooppss never mind it's going to be at another date. Meanwhile if you actually ask the Mayan priests they say it's not going to end the World. It's mainly people outside the culture that say it is.
