Yeah, its not worth buying the best rated DSLR in it's class, what was I thinking.........
Passive aggressive much?

The D90 is a great camera, but only if you get use all of its additional features that add $400-500 over the D5000 kit, particularly the in body focus motor. As the OP doesn't seem to have any previous SLR experience, the D5000 should be more than enough camera for him. I even had previously SLR photography back in the good ol' 35mm days and I found the D5000 to be way more camera than I needed.

All of this is my $.02 of course, but there's no need for the passive aggressive responses. :tiphat:

I've had a D5000 for about a year and am very pleased with it. I may never learn all the features. Great camera, better UI than the Canon. I'd avoid the junky 200mm lens they try to sell. I went with the 70-300mm and it's a very good lens. Cost almost as much as the camera, it loses quality at the full 300mm. Best accessory I got was a monopod for lowlight shooting. I think the best all purpose lens would be the 18-200mm, but couldn't afford that too. You can't go wrong with this one.

The Nikon/Canon debate can get a bit like a Ford/Chevy debate. I'm partial to Canon for no particular reason, but I've heard good things about the Nikon. I think you should just jump in and start shooting. Your skills will improve the more you use either one.

Man, who cares? Get it if it fits your needs and don't worry about it. I still have the N70 that I bought 12 years ago.

I have it on good authority that the new model will come out after you buy your camera. :biggrinjester:

Get huge memory cards... the pic size on these cameras is large and with a good camera, and what Ansel Adams called "seeing", you'll take a lot of pictures.

It's still a lot cheaper than film. At least you can erase the bad shots and reuse the cards.

You may want to seriously reconsider your decision with the release of the new Nikon D3100.

That being said, remember that if you get really serious into photography, the cost of bodies is relatively inconsequential. The lenses, support system, etc. are where your significant expenses end up being.

Compared to the D5000 is this a better camera? I'm not sure how the model numbers work. The specs make it appear so, but what do you think

The D5000 has the flippable screen which I like. It also is only 2MP less which isn't that big of deal to me.
