And this is gun related how?

I think it belongs in the "Off-Topics" forum.

Could you give us a quote/article or something that led you to make this statement so that we can discuss?

The OP is referencing an apology made by a Texas Senator during the hearings today or yesterday for statements made by the President. He likened the fund to be managed by a independent unbiased third party where $20B of BP's money would be then funneled to those deemed appropriate that have been affected by this environmental crisis. The senator called it a shakedown. I'm not sure I completely agree, but there is probably some merit to his point. The President is saying that we're going to take $20B from you, a private company, and do whatever we want with it and there is nothing you can do or say about it.

There is no doubt that BP will pay, but shouldn't that be decided in court? Shouldn't claims have to be made? Shouldn't we find out if there were actually negligence or criminal negligence? What if they did not violate any laws and it was just an accident due to the extreme depth of the well?

BP has said they will pay any valid claim.

Some senator today was asking if anyone has been fired yet. I don't think they would know who to fire at this point. Would you want to fire someone that turned out to not be responsible for any of this?

In a way, I do feel sorry for BP. However, if it is determined that this happened because they were cutting corners then they have slit their own throats.

The proper way to handle compensation for those impacted by the spill is to file a class action law suit against BP/Tansocean/Haliburton for damages. If you're a fisherman (or whatever) who's business is shut down due to this, then you should be able to sue and be rewarded money for the destruction of the business and so on. The states can sue for cleanup costs along their coasts too, as can anyone else that can prove they were reasonably and directly damaged by the spill.

The President ordering BP to create a fund to be administered by someone selected by the President is exactly a shakedown. The man selected to administer the fund is the same 'pay tsar' who determined what the CEOs of the bailed out banks should make. I'm sure he will distribute these funds fairly without the slightest concern for political interests.

I'd really like to know what part of the Constitution establishes that the executive branch can usurp the role of the judicial at the whim of a president looking for an "ass to kick".

The fund is absolutely a shakedown. What really torques me off is something I heard on TV the other day...(can't remember who was talking, but I think it was some politico) said they were going to make BP pay to restore the LA coast to 'before Katrina conditions'. Now scuttlebutt in the O&G field is BP was cutting some serious corners on that rig, but to make them responsible for a hurricane also? That's just ridiculous.

Purplehood, what's your role with Transocean? My co. works with them frequently.
