Co-worker Jumped at Gas Station....Dallas, 4-24-10

Just thought I'd post this to let you know what went down and where.
A couple co-workers of mine were getting ready to go home and taking care of thier end of shift duties by getting some fuel at a gas station on thier way back to HQ.
They stopped at the Chevon on the NE corner of 635 & Midway at approx 3am Saturday morning, got out of the ambulance and started receiving nasty comments from some random thug and even askin my co-worker what his proplem was to which he obviously replied that he didn't have a problem.
The co-worker didn't think much of it when he looked back up and didn't see the guy, next thing you know he absorbs a couple sucker punches as the guy snuck up behind him.
The fight is on! Right there in the parking lot, but sadly it's 3am and traffic is minimal.
I've got no idea where his partner is, who is a small fella btw and prob would have just gotten hurt if he had tried to interveen.
The one under attack is a BIG OL BOY, I'll tell ya, and worked EMS in New Orleans before coming here after Katrina so I assume he knows how to take care of himself.
Long story short the BG got away and my co-worker is ok minus an injured ankle sustained from multiple kicks to the BG. I'll consider this a win though.
I've talked to the guy he worked with that night and two supervisors who all say the BG got whooped!
I'm really lookin forward to seeing the security footage from the stores cameras.
The BG got away but the cops did find his "boo"(girlfrind) riding around on a flat tire. What happens now I don't know, but I am interested to see where it goes from here.

I even made the comment to one of my supervisors that maybe it's time they allow us to start carrying pocket knives...of course his answer was no. But he did mention how effective a portable oxygen cylendar could be against a BG which I thought was funny coming from a supervisor.

So, just a reminder, 635 and Midway is not a nice place to be at 3am. Also, I seem to remember a post on here a while back about something similar in the same general vacinity.

Just one more thing....
I get fuel there alot and it has pretty much just become a routine for me at the end of a shift.
Dont get conplaciant!!! Be vigilant and always on guard! The more laxed you are the more easy of a target you make yourself.
This has been a reality check for all of us to be more aware of our surroundings.

I will take that under advisement, but just in case you were actually worried about me being out and about at 3:00 a.m.... ...I have a king sized Tempur-pedic bed, and there is no finer place to be at three in the morning than stretched out on it, dead to the world, and sleeping the sweet and well-earned sleep of the innocent.



That said, I'm glad your coworker is good to go and nobody got kilt.

I had a guy come up on me very early one morning at a gas station in Tucson. I took the nozzle out of the filler hole and pointed it at him. He moved along.

I laughed at the injured ankle from kicking the BG! That's an injury I could live with!

I used to live out that way and that was my usual gas station. On one particular occasion I pulled in during the day and found a LEO holding a couple of guys at gunpoint while he was waiting for backup. I took a picture, but don't know if I can get it off my old phone.

That is definitely not an area to let your guard down at night. There's a reason they close the inside off and sell things through the sliding box!

I am certain I have seen paramedics with tactical folders in their pockets. Am I mistaken? I would think that a good blade would be a standard issue item. Is it a departmental thing?

I think someone would have to remove a set of medic scissors from their eye if it were me.


In all seriousness glad it worked out. When I read jumped I thought it was like 3 guys at first jumping the medic. You guys should get a bat or dowel rod (for checking the bounce back of the ambulance tires during fuel stops of course - that would get you by UCW) and keep it in the bus. Also - are they solo much - park further from the pump to keep open avenues and lessen likelihood of ambush.

No, we cant even carry a multi-tool unless we remove the blade. Which to me seems to almost render my Gerber useless.
Prob not, though I consider it more or a self defense tool I can see how the higher ups would consider it a weapon and probably forbid it.

Load up one of those darts with a little cocktail of haldol, ativan and benadryl. Thatd put it out!

Its deff a per agency thing.
I wouldnt think itd be a big deal but IMO the agency I work for seems to be more concearned with the possible liability of us actually using a knife to protect ourself rather that us being able to protect ourself. However, the policy is in place for a reason and thats fine, no biggie. I'll just try to kick him in the nards and get back to my rig as soon as possibly and the make like a tree and get the heck outta there!!!

yeah, maybe I should have titled it "attacked" instead of "jumped".
maybe not a dowel rod, but maybe sticking a flare in his ear might change his motives some.
parking further away may be a good option. Giving more room to evade or maneuver around.
