Health care is insane; I don't know where this is going. Take an ordinary ECG of your heart. A Medical Assistant making $8/hr. sticks some electrodes on your chest. They come in boxes of 500, like half a cent each. The MA runs the ECG machine, which cost $399, for a few seconds. It prints out the ECG on some graph paper. The graph paper comes in 100-ft. rolls that cost a few dollars each (in cases of a dozen).

Then comes the bill: ECG - $820.
Then the beauty. The physican grabs the printout, glances at it and says, "yeah, looks OK" and tosses it on the table.
"ECG interpretation: $375"

This is just beyond comprehension.
Medical insurance is one of the reasons that it all costs so much. I have read before that doctors and hospitals do not expect to get the amount that they charge. Each provider decides how much they will cover for any given procedure, often some percentage. So, in essence, the docs and hospitals OVER-charge so they can get something close to what they really want to get for the procedure, whatever it may be. That's a big problem because no one is then sure how much something should really cost. Medical insurance has inflated all the prices for everything medical-related. I'm sure some of the insiders know, but not us "regular folks".
No exactly. Medical payments to providers are decided by a predetermined rate per procedure. So when a provider joins a medical insurance network, they are given a list of how much the insurance will pay for each procedure. It does not matter what the doctor tries to bill, the insurance will only pay the predetermined rate for the procedure. Providers like to bill a ridiculous amount all the while knowing they will only be paid a set amount in order to show that the patient received a discount of the difference. The procedure rates are set according to regional averages.

Medical insurance is only one of the reasons. Fraud, malpractice insurance, and lack of independent doctors (they are mainly all a part of large companies now) are the bigger reasons.
Well, what I do know is that the way things are working right now, that isn't the "free market" at work. The system is broken, but single-payer (government-provided healthcare) will only make it all much, much worse. Maybe what this nation needs is some good, old-fashioned "trust busting". Of course, I won't hold my breath on that one.

This is the reason Doctors often refuse the lower cost insurance plans. The lower cost insurance plans offer lower prices to Doctors to help cut costs. Many Doctors are now part of a "group" that negotiates these contracts and if they can't get the prices they feel they deserve, they simply don't agree to the contract with that particular insurance provider.

BETRAYED: The Rise and Fall of Dr. Fauci
https://remnantnewspaper.com/web/index. ... f-dr-fauci
Introduction

On Easter Sunday evening, we reached a turning point in the monumental, wholly unprecedented, nation-wrecking fiasco that is Coronagate: President Trump retweeted a post with the hashtag #FireFauci. Both the original tweet and Trump’s telling retweet were prompted by Anthony Fauci’s latest appearance on Fake News CNN. On Easter Sunday, no less, Fauci, who has been undermining Trump since the day this fiasco began, implied in response to loaded questions by the insufferable Jake Tapper that Trump could have saved lives had he announced “social distancing guidelines” that Fauci supposedly recommended to him as early as the third week of February.

Fauci made no such recommendation in February, but was rather saying the exactly opposite that month, as even the left-wing Politico shows in an article entitled Virus 'Experts' Early Statements Belie 'Prescient' Portrayal. Thus, on Easter Sunday Fauci cooperated with Tapper in disseminating a demonstrable lie to the nation.

Exactly there is no free market.

If there was a true free market an average hospital would resemble a Walmart. A multistory hospital in a medical center is much more expensive than a single story one out in the suburbs. Do you shop at a 8 story downtown department store anymore?

You would fly to Kansas and have your knee replaced at a one story factory that only did knee replacements.

Drug costs would be the same in the US, Mexico and Canada.

You could go to Target and pick up any drug you wanted with no prescription. Want some Hydroxychloroquine, go get it now.

Laws and Licenses, barriers that are put up stifle free enterprise. ( yes they keep us safer ) But are they all there for that reason alone? Or is it to protect the profession of health care?

Imagine if every job required a license and 8 years of schooling?

I love our healthcare system, they have saved my life twice now.
But is every rule or law to keep us safer or is some of it just the way we have always done it and let’s not rock the boat.

I mean look what happens when a non doctor like Trump has the nerve to suggest a novel treatment to a life threatening novel illness.

Just an FYI, Texas Department of Health and Human Services has recently added fatality statistics for cleared investigations on the COVID dashboard. I had emailed them a couple of times wondering why that info wasn't available, though I'm sure I wasn't the only one wondering. Anyway, they obliged, and that data is now up. It is raw info only, nothing that could identify any person. About 40% of the current known fatal cases have been investigated and cleared. Over half of those who didn't make it were 75 years and older; over 75 percent were 65 and over. There are no fatalities listed, at this time, for anyone 19 years and younger. There is also data showing overall sex and race, but not correlated with age groups. There is no data for comorbidities. As more cases are cleared in days to come, the data should become more accurate.

It was big news 15 hours ago that oil had hit $15 a barrel for the 1st time in 21 years. Now it's touched $11 a barrel. The website https://oilprice.com/ is currently timing out due to all the traffic hitting it. The price of oil and the bottom having dropped out of demand globally is the economic double-whammy hitting Texas.

Such a bargain, but nowhere to store it. All the Tanks are full.

Yep. That's what's killing the price today, and the futures for right now. Oil sitting in a tanker; has to be moved; no room at the inn, and the inns with room can say, "Well, howsabout I take it off your hands for $8 a barrel?" A good time to invest in futures if you've got the bucks because demand for oil won't just disappear after COVID-19, but a scary time to be one of the umpteen small & midsize companies in the oil services sector in Texas.

Apparently it is for contracts that expire tomorrow. Futures for June are still in $22 range.

The article I read said it is a bad time to invest in short term (within 90 days) futures, because they are currently selling for less than the spot price right now. Great time to invest in one to two year futures though.

And just so everyone is clear, the price for WTI crude is down to 10/bbl. The price for Brent crude is still in the 22/bbl range. I am not as clear on the differences between the two as I would be if I were investing in them, but I know there are chemical differences between the two. I believe that one is better for gasoline while the other is better for certain other petroleum products though i could be wrong on that.

The biggest difference is who is set up to receive it and to process it ... I think Brent is a lighter cleaner (less sulpher) oil, but I'm not too sure
