Fake news has been around a long time. The term
Yellow journalism was coined in the mid-1890s... and its characteristics:
"-scare headlines in huge print, often of minor news
-lavish use of pictures, or imaginary drawings
-use of faked interviews, misleading headlines, pseudoscience, and a parade of false learning from so-called experts"
...are still in wide use today.
I saw one interview where a legacy media guy said "there's always been an element of fiction to newspapers" and it wasn't until recent times that a journalist could get fired for it (e.g.
Jayson Blair)
