Re: Windows 10 Shares Your Wi-Fi With Contacts
This always makes me laugh, when people talk about how Microsoft is spying on you, yet they have Google Email accounts. (Hint: Google READS your email to target ads to you.)
Same goes for Apple. And your Internet Provider.
MS did this to try to regain marketshare. Face it, people are not upgrading PCs like they used to... they can get internet and whatnot on their TVs, Phones, Laptops, etc.
Windows Phone isn't even a blip on the Phone Radar Screen. And Windows 8 has been a Marketing Disaster. (Although it is a very stable OS, and can be made to work like Windows 7)
MS is going for Gold on this. The New CEO is trying to turn this behemoth around, and it is working. Everything is different. The whole Company Philosophy has changed.
The reason behind FREE is MS wants to make a big splash. Most will upgrade for FREE. And then there is the fact they want to Unify the Phone, Tablet, XBOX, and Desktop to all run the same OS
People like consistency. The goal is to build 1 App that runs all ALL devices. And to cause you to want to use their services, so you are more likely to buy MS products.
And if you do that, Developers will make more Apps, Programs... causing more market share.
They are so serious about making Win 8 go away, they even went to Windows 10 as the next number. Ha! I LOL at the people I hear that say to me "I HATE Windows 8!" but when pressed I find out they actually have never used it, but their friend has a son that used it and he said it stinks! (Insert Eye Roll here)
No one forces you to use Windows. There are other alternatives out there. The supposed spyware that everyone complains about can be turned off.
My upgrade last night was painless. I had to agree to the EULA, hit Continue, wait an hour for installation to finish, and then log on. That easy.

Andy, thanks for that! I like Ubuntu but YUMI looks cool, the idea of trying different ones before choosing the one to install is really attractive.

Upgraded with only a small issue - didn't have sound after.
Just went into Device Manager, deleted the sound device and let it scan again. It installed the device again and worked.

For Linux distros, I like Linux Mint. It comes with multi-media support already enabled including proprietary codecs. I also use it on live usb for when I need Linux on the go.

i tried ubuntu long long time ago and was just very odd and not so easy to deal with but again it was very long time ago -- so i decided to dive in again as i have heard its much better now days so just installed it on this pc that has windows 7 on it so i can choose which one to boot up with at the start up -- but for some reason i guess it too a huge amount of the drive and gave it to ubuntu -- went from having 160 gigs free to only having 30 free now -- does seem much better than it was long time ago though guess will leave it for now and give it a twirl once and a while to test out -- just wish it didnt take all that space

Yep, I think I will stay with Linux

Windows 10 also marks a potential milestone in a change of direction for a company that has built a $170 billion empire by selling software. In Windows 10, the business model of Microsoft's future is laid bare. In short: It's all about data.
At this point, Microsoft's operating system ships with a lot of services that users are already familiar with and dependent upon (e.g., OneNote, Outlook, Word, Excel). Windows 10 makes it clear that anything you do in these apps can (and likely will) be scanned, parsed, and sold to advertisers. Your emails, messages and documents -- nothing is off limits.
Sure, Google has already won hands-down in the search business on the Internet. But Microsoft still owns the desktop in both professional and personal environments. That reach could be over 150 million users, a number that includes the majority of web users and then some. In other words, the company is building an ad business of epic proportions off its existing user base.

And of course there is always the surprise bonus of ALL your pictures becoming a screen saver slide show. This can be bad if you kept your porn pics in a sub folder... LOL. Doh!!!

According to the comments after the CNN article (which reads like a paid advertisement) Win 10 makes it impossible to turn off automatic updates....that makes it a no go for me, even without the data mining.

I'm going to stick with Windows Vista for now. Or for at least as long as this PC I have now runs. I don't use all of that fancy stuff like Wi-Fried, and iPee phone thingies.

Put your data in the cloud, save the Feds effort and money. But because Microsoft physically stores and processes the data, regardless of where the data is stored (i.e. geographically) -- even outside of U.S. soil, it can be requested by U.S. law enforcement authorities through means of invoking the Patriot Act on a wholly owned U.S. company.
Under EU law, the data processor must inform the data controller when data is being moved outside the EU.
Yet, because Microsoft is a wholly owned U.S. company, data can be requested while the company is gagged from saying anything to the data controlling customer by U.S. law enforcement, leading Microsoft into difficult ethical territory.
