This is technically a hypothetical:

IF I was travelling to California on a business trip, I know how to fly with a weapon. I also know how to store and transport a weapon per California law. HOWEVER, what I do not know is how storing and transporting that weapon works if it is a weapon that California has deemed illegal. (gen 4 Glock 17) (hi-cap mags) Is it illegal to have that weapon and mags in the state, or is it only illegal If I am one of their residents? Any hypothetical answers to this totally hypothetical question would help.

No "standard cap" magazines allowed in state. 10 rounds or less I believe.

would that be something that would get me flagged at the airport? Hypothetically?

Back in my traveling days I took California legal pistols with me. Getting there was not an issue. Flying out was. Be prepared to have your weapon turned over to LAPD or whatever PD is responsible for the airport after you check in on your way to TSA. They will run your weapon to see if it is stolen so it better be California compliant. Don't play stupid games when traveling with firearms in tyrannical states.

It is not legal to bring those mags into the state.

Before I knew that, I flew in and out of LAX with a pistol with 15-rd mags and no one paid any attention to the mags. That doesn't mean it'll always work, but I know I've gotten away with it.

I understand, but even if I did have a 10 round mag, a gen 4 glock is not on the approved list.

Yep: you may not bring any "ammunition feeding devices with a capacity greater than ten rounds" into California. The only exceptions are magazines of greater than 10 rounds that you already owned in California before 2000.

If so--and I'm not sure here; once I left California years ago I have studiously avoided going back--I believe the "approved" list applies only to guns manufactured in California, or imported "for sale, lent, given, kept for sale, or offered/exposed for sale..." I don't think the list applies to temporary visitors, but don't trust my opinion on that.

Edited to add: When I browsed that California approved list, got to admit I was surprised that no Glock's made in the USA are approved and, as you noted, no Gen 4s are approved.

I have travelled there before with unapproved guns, but I just don't want any hiccups
