Hi all. Getting ready to buy a new ccw. Am leaning towards a S&W SDVE 40. Is this a comfortable easy gun for ccw. Really li ke the 40cal for the knock down but may consider a 9mm. Any help would be appreciated.

SW M&P40 is a great gun and easy to conceal with a good holster and gun belt.

I may avoid the SW40VE however.

Take a look at the S&W Shield in .40.
Great concealability and you can find them at a decent price.
They also come in 9mm.

If you decide to go with the 9mm don't forget the Ruger SR9c.

"knock down" Are we really still saying this?

I think you need to do some caliber research.

There are many better options than that bulky model. Let us know your budget.

Glock 23 for a compact gun, easy to conceal.
Glock 27 subcompact less grip than 23 so little easier to hide.

All good guns. Am wanting to stay under $400 if possible. Like the 40 cal but also have an eye on the new ruger 9e 9mm. Have Dry fired the sdve 40cal and like how it feels. Don't know anything else about this gun so am open to suggestions

MJ, NO small bore will knock someone down EVER. Please leave the buzz words to the liberals whom refuse to research things before they spout. Cars knock people down when they hit them Artillery rounds will knock someone down large enough explosive devices will knock someone down, a hard shove to the chest will knock someone down but mall bore projectiles just wont EVER

Where abouts are you? The S&W Shield can be had under $400 new and is a great carry gun. The Ruger SR9C was a good recommendation. If you are in Dallas or Austin, GT Distributors has police trade in M&P's and Glock 22's for great prices -- although they are large guns.

And I may catch flack for this, but Taurus has put out some very decent guns in the last few years. I've field tested the Millennium and it's a damn fine gun for the price.

I've been carrying a .40 for a loooong time. Currently carrying an HK P2000SK in .40.

If I was starting from scratch today, I'd go with 9mm. Probably the P2000SK, still, but definitely 9mm.
The "stopping power" of 9mm rounds has improved to the point where more rounds in an easier to shoot caliber is just better.

I carry the Ruger SR40c daily. Very easy to carry and pretty comfortable.

Great suggestions. I live near dallas. Have been using a 1911 45cal since I can remember. Thought about a taurus but not heard anything good about them. Have shot the glock 40. Just not impressed. Sorry all you glock fans

If it were me I would focus more on the ability to place follow-up shots quickly and accurately and less on 'knockdown' ability.
40s&w tends to be more snappy than a 9mm making it more difficult to get follow-up shots in quick succession. 9mm vs 40 ballistics aren't so far apart that more time between rounds is worth it for me.

I own a M&P 40c (also a 9mm conversion barrel) and a M&P shield (9mm). Both are awesome guns and around your price-point - with the shield being slightly less expensive(got mine for $369+tax) and more concealable due to it being a single-stack. For me the M&P ergonomics are hard to beat.

I've bought a lot of used guns (in fact, buying another one tomorrow).

M&P from S&W and XDs from Springfield Armory are both really good. I want to try the CCP from Walther, which looks really sweet, but I have yet to shoot that . Beretta makes the PX4 Storm in a sub-compact that makes a great ccw. I think it is a bit bigger than some of the competitors but I personally really like the Storm series of handguns and for whatever reason, they seem to be easier to manage in .40 than some of the other pistols I have shot in that caliber. Maybe it is just me.
.40 is snappy and can be a little tough to shoot, especially in a subcompact. While I like .40 in a full-sized handgun, it is a little too much for me to deal with in a sub when it comes to double tapping and fast follow up shots. I go to 9mm for my small sized handguns, but everyone is different.

How far ccw do you want to go? Kahr CW/CM series? 6/7 shots. 9mm/.40/.45 I'm happy with my CW40 although it's not my main ccw.
