It will only be as good as the information available on restricted locaitons. I will bet it is not very good.

Interesting concept, I think I'll just continue to use my eyes and ears as they've served me well over the past 12+ years of carrying.

Why not? I run an IPAD application for airplane navigation. It barks at me before I enter a runway.

Why not? Well, let's see... Because it is two totally different data collection methods. My friend, you have just done the same thing you criticize people around here for doing.

While your RAAS, WAAS, TAWS and GPS iPad app are very cool and work very well, (by the way, in most cases, not approved, only acceptable to the FAA) the input of the data are very strictly controlled. Right now, I believe that there are 2, maybe 3 companies that provide the data point to Garmin, Jepessen, Lufthansa and the smaller ones out there and our gooberment still collects a lot of data through the DAFIF program.

In other words, I cannot call up and have them add, ooh, let's say a new taxi way to KDFW and that be published. I can however log on to the iPhone app and report any location I want as a Gun Free Zone.

Garbage in, Garbage out is the problem these apps have. It's the same type issue other's have failed from unless you build a set of people who will be responsible for verification of the info. Now, if you did it something like Captcha does, that may help. I've got the same problem with a collection of speed camera and red light cameras for my radar detector. Garbage in, Garbage out.

You'd be surprised how stupid pilots can be sometimes. I know, I am one (not that stupid cause I'm still alive), and have seen a lot of it.

It happens more than the general public know.

That is one of the big benefits of having RAAS installed. It also tells you if you are lined up on the wrong runway or landing on a taxi way.

I'm sorry, I'm still missing it. I'm asking a technical question. Why can't the application recognize when I approach a "forbidden" GPS corrdinate? I don't think I've criticized people for asking technical questions, but feel free to remind me, please.

Exactly. Users/admins can pin coordinates of Gun Free Zones. Applications can be location aware.

RX8er, I think you misunderstood me. I was asking why the application couldn't warn when you approached something that was labelled as a Gun Free Zone.

I understand completely why allowing users to mark Gun Free Zones willy-nilly is going to cause problems.

Need? No hopefully not.
It's just another measure of safety. Modern cars have ABS. Some high end modern car manufactures are developing auto-braking systems. You don't "need" either.

Come to Austin some time and I'll take you for a ride to a major airport at night. I'll let you navigate out of the parking area on to one of several major runways. Trust me, it looks like a sea of lights.

If I'm lost, I stop and ask for "progressive" directions. I usually ask for progressive directions at any new airport. The feature we are discussion wasn't something that I sought out, it was just added to a common navigation application that I use... Kinda like the GPS on your car, but with verbal and visual warnings. See that warning and you're not expecting it, it might save someone's life.

The biggest problem I see with any type of automation is the failure of it to work properly or to be relied upon too much. Since we have already talked about aviation, take the Asiana flight that crashed in SF for instance. The pilots had switched off the auto pilot and were expecting the engines to be up at power, but they were set to idle. By the time the pilots realized they were too low and the throttles were not in the proper position it was too late to recover.

I see too many people who would rely soley on their iPhone to tell them they were close to a prohibited location and the location be missing from the database and never warn the person they were not allowed to enter. People become lazy and too reliant on the automation and it gets them in trouble.

Now, take texas3006.com, it is only there for reference and is a good source to see if a place has been entered that is 30.06 or 51% posted, but it is not all inclusive and there are tons of places that are not in there.

You could never rely on the accuracy of any site where users were responsible for posting accuracy... It'd never work from that aspect.
