When to start chl renewal??

Im six months out from my chl expiring. At this time I still have not received a renewal notice from DPS. Can I start the renewal process without the notice? When should I start? I work offshore and am gone for almost a month at time, so I actually only have 3 months of being home before I expire. I don't want to lapse on this. Any advice on how/when to start without the renewal notice.
Thanks,
Darrel

Wait until Sept 1. Renewal requirements are changing, and you won't be required to take a renewal class after Sept 1.

No renewal CLASS is necessary after Sept 1st. You still need to renew.
Sorry to hear that you will expire in September 15th.

Seeing it takes DPS some processing time I do not believe he can wait until Sept but should go ahead and get it done.

Will it not be like the driver's license renewal with an e-mail confirmation and temporary certificate? When I changed my address online and paid my fee I would assume that the confirmation e-mail would give me grace if I were asked to show my license. Then again it may depend upon the officer who is questioning you...

Mine expires August 29
Just a few days and I could have been free.
When do you receive the renewal notice? I have not received one yet.

Mine expires in August 11th. I received the renewal notice several months ago.

You should have received it about 4-5 months ago. I would go log onto the DPS CHL website
https://txapps.texas.gov/txapp/txdps/chl/ and see if you are able to renew online.
Mine expires august 8th, sent in my paperwork a month ago. Strange that it went from everything green except for yellow "performing background check", then my fingerprints went yellow "under review"... Hopefully I don't have to redo them.

Thank you. I did exactly that. I believe the error was my "mailing address" was a post office. I closed my PO Box and I guess is isn't realize the problem with the mailing address. It has been a few years back so I am assuming they no lo get forward my mail.
I will be in class this Saturday.

On a similar topic, I filled out the online renewal application before I learned about the upcoming change. My checklist calls for a renewal class. My license does not expire until after September. Can I just wait until after 9/1, and send back the checklist with out the class form? Or would I have to reapply, and pay the the fee again? If the latter, would an having an open in-process application cause complications with a new application?
Thanks!
Ben.

If you already submitted your renewal application then it's subject to the current rules.

Does that mean I'm stuck with it? Can I not reapply under the new rules when they change?
It's not a big deal either way, as reapplying would cost on the average the same as a class. My bigger concern is that, given my work travel schedule the rest of the summer, and the availability of renewal classes in my area, it may be after 9/1 before I can get into one. And I wonder if they will even exist after then.
