Were you one of the first?

I am just wondering how many members here acquired their CHL the first year Texas had one. I would also like to know how long that first CHL was good for. I remember them doing two different time frames the first year.

You have me beat. I was 2008.

One reason I asked is I personally know three people who got the CHL on the first go around and have not had one since they expired. I think some folks got it because of the novelty factor associated at the beginning.

I was one of the tin foil hat guys afraid to get on the radar. I finally realized we are all drone targets anyway. Might as well get legal.

Yes...

I remember mostly ALL the paperwork, forms, affidavits a note from my mother stating that someone must have blown out my pilot light...

Having to list ALL the places I lived at for the last 5 years...I was still in apartment mode at the time...

It was cumbersome, designed to discourage, and at the end of day, getting ALL that info together and sending the stuff to Austin of all places, there was still this annoying little voice in my head saying "Why do YOU need to carry a gun!"

I am glad that since then the process has been streamlined, to some extent, and that the information they need, even for the new folks, has been reduced to a manageble level...

The one thing we can ALL be proud of is that this community of law-abiding citizens has a better track record for not having criminal issues attributeed by us, than regular commissioned law enforcement in this state...

And we need to shout that fact from the rooftops every chance we get in any argument with those that still ask, "Why do YOU need to carry a gun!"

My first class in the fall of 1995 was offered at Houston Community College with a trip to Carter's for the range.

There was gentleman in his 90s that had been in the horse cavalry. He was a fine shot.

Initially, they broke up the licenses between two years and four years. Mine was a two year.

That... IS A GREAT POINT!! I will never forget all the fret and worry over gunfights in the streets! We have proven to be the opposite of what our apponents claimed we would be! :patriot:

I took my class in 1995, but it wasn't effective until January 1, 1996, per SB60. Mine was one of the 2 year licenses that most of us got then.

I procrastinated a bit so I didn't get my license until mid or late February 1996, if memory serves. On the plus side, it was valid through my birthday in 2000.

I didn't get mine right away because I was always working and couldn't carry at work. I almost always had one in my vehicle though. I still can't carry at work now but I work less hours, and there's more zombies.

Taking the class in October, I believe I received mine in late February.

Did the four year option in 96 and EVERY year I would procrastinate and not renew and then when the deadline passed I would go take the full course again. Have done that four times now.

And yes the first class it seemed like half the class time was to assist us in getting all the paperwork done. It definitely has smoothed out a lot since then.
