This bill, filed by TX State Rep. Allen Fletcher, is not only an important step to improving safety in the event of a mass casualty situation like what happened at Virginia Tech, it is also important for the personal safety of many students, teachers and other employees who must oftentimes walk to their cars late at night in dark parking lots.

With Fletcher filing it in the House, you can pretty much guarantee it will make it through committee. I am sure Todd Hunter will support it through Calendars as well.

Now it's time to alert the media and emphasize that students would not be permitted to carry willy nilly but that they would be at least 21, vetted, etc. Of the total student population, only a relative handful would have the financial ability and interest to pursue a license, unlike the general public's vision of every kid on campus being armed. back in the day, I too had to traverse those dark parking lots late at night and at the time my weapon of choice was a switch blade knife. Had to use it one time, and I was glad I had it to use.
