You'll Love What DPS in Palo Pinto County is Doing!!

Got stopped for a partially blocked tail light and license plate. Just got a warning....

But, they are conducting mandatory firearm checks for all stopped CHL drivers to verify that their firearm is not stolen!

Have you ever heard of a greater violation of your civil rights, discrimination and out right insult to all CHL holders?

I would think a CHL holder would be the last place to find a stolen gun..

I was under the assumption that these types of actions would require a warrant. Being disarmed for safety isn't like when they impound your car after an arrest.

I'd ask under what pretense or probable cause are they conducting an illegal search? And then I'd make sure to get the badge number of the officer I dealt with and tell them to expect a letter from my lawyer.

Your not the first to report this silly practice..

Personally, I would expend many hours of my time to make it a painful policy to inflect on us.

What happens to the records of these "stolen weapons checks"? Are they in a permanently filed some where? Where do the police get the probable cause for these searches? When we get CHLs do we forfeit the right against unreasonable search? As hinted above they'd have more chance of finding stolen weapons on MPA carried weapons.

I'm curious to know if this is really an illegal search or if it's just an abuse of authority.

My understanding is that without probably cause, it's an illegal search.

Interesting, I live in PPC and have not heard about this. Of course I am not privy to the workings of law enforcement, and when stopped recently I was not armed so there was nothing to run. I will ask around at the gun club at the next meeting and see if anyone has had a serial number run and post the results.

I cannot see how it is legal without probably cause, I will keep my phone ready to record any encounter, but I won't go asking to be pulled over.

It makes no sense. If they have to do these checks, then they assume we are criminals and they are trying to catch us...but then why did they issue us licenses? I'd be curious if they are finding any stolen guns. What good are the background checks if they have to do these checks.

While I disagree with the practice, the threat of hearing from someone's lawyer is so overdone that it kinda sounds like yelling "mooooooooooom!"

I also would find a hard copy of this policy before assuming that it's actually happening.

So it's childish to attempt to stand for your rights and principles? I must have missed the memo.
