This is a long video by a ER/OR doc discussing his experiences with gunshot wounds. A few gory photos!

So who would have thought that 6 out of every 7 handgun shooting victims survive? Fascinating information about how the medical field continues to improve as they learn things. And a huge tip of the hat to our boys in the field who, by getting shot in battle, are making our survivability rates ever higher. Just one more way that our vets contribute to our well being, and one more reason to thank them profusely whenever we see them.

Good video. Explains a lot about the need for multiple shots with handguns and possibly why the police do shoot so many times. If anyone has this type of information they will probably not shoot just once or twice and check to see if the BG is still coming or not. It is more reasonable to shoot 5 or 10+ and check when you have to change magazines.

I'm almost surprised it is that low a survival rate. Anyone who has spent time working in an ER can tell you that most GSW victims survive their injuries.

I think that is the first time I actually had enough interest to watch a full 34 minutes of video in a gun forum link. Thanks for posting, and I have bookmarked.
From a self defense perspective, the answer is clear: more bullet holes.

Thanks. When I saw it, I was a little surprised. I have no medical training or experience, and have never been in, or at, a gun fight. I have always wondered if the bad guy just flops over on the ground instantly when hit with a bullet from whatever gun and caliber you happen to have.... end of threat, kind of like shooting the gun out of the bad guys hand from across the street, like on The Lone Ranger! It seemed impossible, and sure enough, mostly it is apparently.
The thing I like about reality is that it is so, ahh, real. It pays to know what reality is.

He also definitely stated that in handgun calibers, bigger is probably better.

With the caveat that it's better to hit them with a smaller bullet than scare them with a bigger one.
I remember one pathologist writing about calibers and gunshot wounds seen at the morgue saying "With a .44 magnum, there is no such thing as an attempted suicide."

Interesting Video. These things are good to know. If you ever need to use your gun, chances are you might also be one who gets shot....so Don't give up fighting! A side note, since some people get shot with their own gun, might be worth carrying a 9mm vs a .45 just sayin

I think the numbers are skewed from the doctors view. Yes, 6 of 7 that end up in the ER survive but that does not include those that never made it to the ER. For an accurate representation of the survival rate you have to count both methods of transportation, the coroner van and the ambulance.

That number was based on the CDC's data that shows that 6 of 7 survive, not on ER data.
So the Doctor's approximation wasn't far enough off to quibble about and has nothing to do with how many make it to ER.

Thanks for the video. Raises questions for me about the FN 5.7 round and how it would stack up, since it has a much higher muzzle velocity than typical pistol rounds. I wonder if it would tumble & fragment, causing the same type of damage as the leg wound shown in the video (entry at knee, destroying the tibia)?
