chl distribution?

Just curious, but I read somewhere that one in 55,000 Texans have a chl, anyone know of a map showing that figure broken down by county? I was thinking that the border counties might be quite a bit higher rate of chl holders.
Along the same lines are there numbers/estimates for what fraction of the population (TX) that carry without a chl?

I don't think I've seen anything that has the total number of licensees by county, but the DPS does publish on their website the number of new licenses issued each year by county. That might tell you what areas are getting the most CHLs.

To answer your first question "yes" - on the DPS website there is information regarding how many per county per year and total.
The second question "NO" and no one should be carrying a concealed handgun without a proper CHL. In the car is OK but not on your person.

I believe
these statistics are the closest we have.
2010 by county:

2010 by ZIP code:

I would think DPS would have an estimate based on arrests for possession wo a chl. And of course no one should carry without a chl but we all know that there must be people (not just criminal elements) that carry anyway... some from ignorance, some from laziness, etc. When I was a kid many many decades ago it was common for farmers to keep a pistol in their pocket for snakes and I don't think there was a chl back in the 50's. I'm just asking, not advocating.

Not very useful to the OP without the corresponding population data...
Harris county had 16% of issued licenses... but... is Harris greater than or less than 16% of the TX population? And by how much.
Without normalizing for population, it's impossible to answer the original question..

Thanks. A quick perusal appears to show that dense urban populations is a bigger driver to get a chl than proximity to the border. I read some of the posts about the horrendous events in Nuevo Laredo and thought that might drive folks on the border to get a chl and an armory!!
oops! I jumped the gun!! I thought these were the % of the population not % of chl holders!!

Data is available for both per zip CHL numbers and per zip population (census data?) Making a GIS map with colored zip area could be done easily if you have the right tool.

He's free to merge it with the 2010 Census data, as are you. However, I don't have time unless it's billable work.

Closer to 1 in 50. 1/2 million CHLs out of 25 million people.

Sometime around a year ago, I think the Austin American-Statesman published a map of the Travis/Williamson county area showing a graphical distribution. I assume they did this by plugging DPS data into some GIS software. The point of their story was that most of the area CHLs are clustered up in Williamson County.

He he...
I was just pointing out that it's not the data that would answer the OP.... Wasn't casting dispersions on you Boss..
This data claims to show the licensing rates per capita on a google map.
http://www.texastribune.org/library/dat ... ense-maps/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Note: This is only for the 2009 data.... One year of "issued" licenses by county, per capita.
It's easy to find census data by county, but the TX CHL data (original links) only provide data for one year.
If anyone has the data for
total current licenses by county, I can take a shot at some analysis.
I seem to be sitting by the phone waiting for calls today.

Correct. The ratio would be even better if we based the ratio on the number of Texans 21 years old and older.

Wow, no kidding. According to this breakdown:
http://www.censusscope.org/us/s48/chart_age.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; it looks like about a third of our population is 20 and under. So more like 1 in 33 of the 21+ population, 3%.

It is actually closer to 40% under 21 (At least when I had to do a report in college about 6 years back). Then you also have to factor in those who are ineligible for a CHL for medical, criminal etc. The amount of people eligible starts to go down drastically when you factor all that in.
