A friend who has a Utah CHL heard a rumor that his Utah CHL was no longer valid in Texas. He does not have a Texas CHL. I told him, to the best of my knowledge, that his Utah CHL was still good in Texas, but when he went to renew it, he would have to get his Texas CHL first. Is this correct? Also, is his Utah CHL still good in Utah until it expires? I would assume so. Thanks.

I believe it was New Mexico that dropped Utah.

All correct, G26ster. Utah Non-Resident CFP is still honored by Texas, and by Utah. However, he will not be able to renew when it expires, unless he obtains a Texas CHL before then.

People have been using this as a loophole to avoid having to take the long class and the expense of a Texas CHL. My opion is you get what you pay for. The education on Texas laws is priceless plus knowing going into a traffic stop that you are totaly in compliance. Some police officers might not know.

Actually, that doesn't seem to be correct. The source you cited in that post said nothing about not having a home-state license as the reason for revocations.

I agree Skiprr. I suspect a higher number of applications is the primary driver behind the higher number of revocations, although I can't say conclusively without the raw data. It's also possible the JIT crowd has a larger percentage of borderline applicants who get revoked because of DWI or other Utah disqualifiers that aren't NICS disqualifiers. Again, without the raw data...

My Utah CFP class taught much more about Texas Law, where to/not to carry and conflict resolution than my Texas CHL class. My Texas CHL shooting grading was a joke- everyone passed the firtst time, even though some barely hit the target with a few shots. Instructor was a wild-eyed ultra right-winger that said it was up to us CHLers to save the world!

Sounds like your Utah CFP class wasted your money and time...it should have taught you the laws for the state it was issued for...or was it one of those 3 hour quickies?

The Utah course is VERY Texas specific. My instructor is a Texan who originally taught the Texas course.

I took the Utah course for several reasons:

1 Texas does not know that I have it
2 Cheaper
3 Quicker

Call me paranoid, but I do not like the State knowing my business. As for LEO encounters...no issues so far. Was in a motorcycle wreck (not my fault) and was carrying. The cop did not care, gave him my Texas DL and my Utah CCP. In Oklahoma, the officer asked why I was not carrying...we talked guns and I did not get a ticket.
