I think my instructor said you can apply up to six months in advance.

Check the Renewal Section in the Concealed Handgun Laws - http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/InternetFo ... CHL-16.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Has all the info you need to know.

You will get a letter from DPS about six months before your CHL expires.

Renewal class can be taken within six months of expiration date or up to one year after expiration date.

No sooner than the end of February, apply on line. Once you pay on line you can print out a single bar coded sheet. Take the class and send the original CHL100 form along with the bar coded sheet to Austin. That's it. Simple.

I got the letter, did the renewal process online and paid the fee. I've signed up for a class in March. I'm wondering though, if the state will send out a new handbook. I know there have been at least a couple of changes since 2006.

The books are no longer mailed out. The books are now available for purchase for $5.00 plus tax.

You can download the book from the DPS web page. I printed out a couple copies, bound them, and have them at the house and in the car for reference. Just never know when you need some light reading material!
