It's clearly not perfect, what would you change, and what would you change the most?
The Wait time, the test, the shooting test, the class length, the fee's, the DPS wait time?

What would you do different and how?

Not that I am generally for more requirments :rules: . The proficency test should include general handling and knowledge of pistol/revolver. I have seen lots of people that can fire some rounds but do not know proper handling and function. Maybe some portion of the proficency including some kind of firearm knowledge test.

I'm not teacher but there it is. Oh yeah the wait time could be better.

Repeal PC chapter 46 for starters.

I would lower the fees. $140 is way too much. Any other state you can get your initial for $50 and renewals for $25. I remember when I was living in Texas and I had just turned 21 I was looking forward to getting my license. However, the $140 plus the cost of the class kept me from getting it for another 3 years.
I should add that because of the fees it was 11 months after I filled out the application and payed the state before I took the class. When your working and juggling college it makes it hard to find the extra money. I would also do away with the prohibition on bar carry and polling place carry. I'm sure there are a few designated drivers who wish they could have carried. In Idaho there haven't been any problems with people carrying at bars or polling places. Just don't drink while carrying.

Make the shooting portion more difficult.
Make the written portion more difficult. Cite the law but more on when can and can't shoot scenarios.

Also whoever does best in the shooting portion should get a chocolate chip cookie. Cookie...

I'd bump up the hands-on portion. An applicant should be familiar with his/her gun more than knowing which end the bullet thingies come out.

Repeal the whole thing, as well as changing section 23 of the TX Constitution to omit: "but the Legislature shall have power, by law, to regulate the wearing of arms, with a view to prevent crime."

Such a statement is at odds with the US Constitution's 2nd Amendment and also with section 2 of the Texas Constitution.

The proficency test should include general handling and knowledge of pistol/revolver. And EVERYONE should get a chocolate chip cookie!

I'd like to see it repealed completely and allow the 2nd Amendment rights to be exercised unfettered.

Short of that, I'd like to see the fees lowered, and renewal after the initial class/shoot to be online only, with no fingerprints, no class, and no shooting.

interesting that out of 10 or 12 responses so far, 90% or more are in favor of stricter gun control in TX rather than returning to Constitutional principles... that on a CHL forum. :banghead:

It may be the way the question is formed, thus why I answered two ways. No one in their right mind on here would advocate more restrictions.

Everyone here would agree the right way to handle it would be to allow anyone to carry a weapon without even applying for permission.

It sounds like what is wanted is more quality and less hoop jumping.
