Any bone-head CHLers?

Guys,

I haven't met a bone-head with a CHL yet, but I've certainly met bone-heads with guns. Have any of you guys seen an idiot with a CHL announce out loud that he was carrying, or brag about his plastic out loud. My circle of CHL friends are all wise enough to keep it in their pocket and keep their mouths shut in public, but I would love to hear some stories about those who aren't so wise.

just my entire family
but that's usually during family functions where we all compare each others newest acquisitions .

and yes, a couple of them are boneheads ....but not in a bad way .

I have heard one in Academy say it louder than he wanted to when buying a gun  . Then the guy that was selling him the gun started loudly telling him how he has one too and that he suggests every customer that buys a gun from him get one which I had heard him do on occasion. The salesman disappeared not long after but I don't know if it was in connection with his boisterous support for CHL.

I think the only real time I hear it is in the process of gun sales. However I will say that I would not have one now if not for a guy I know, and never suspected at all of having one, telling me about CHL. That is why I will talk about CHL with anyone who is interested in guns or talks about crime. I don't yell it out but I do tell people about CHL and try to not confirm having a CHL in the process unless I know the person well.

Yup. Not only for the way he will discuss it openly in front of people he doesn't know, but also for his choice of stowage locations when he has to disarm. Pretty sure leaving it laying beside a loaded mag on a seat with nothing even covering it leans a bit too hard on the "hidden in plain sight" idea.

I've run into more than I thought I ever would and I try to stay as far away from them as possible. This group aside, it seems to be older men that are like this more than other groups. The 5 or 6 men that have seen fit to boldly tell me and anyone else within earshot that they have a CHL and ask if I'd like to see it were morons.

During the summer, after I had applied for my CHL but before I received it, I bought at an estate sale a bunch of reloading equipment. Among it were a variety of things I didn't need. I advertised some things like brass and bullets in calibers I couldn't use, and got some calls. One guy who bought some things insisted upon showing me his CHL to "prove" he wasn't a radical gun nut or whatever. I didn't really care, I figured the criminals probably weren't reloading ammo. I had not mentioned anything about having applied for a CHL, I figured it wasn't anyone's business, and I was a bit surprised that he insisted that I look at his license. All in all, it seemed a bit weird to me. I guess he was just proud of it. :anamatedbanana

one stupid thing I remember seeing was a guy in a mall in South Africa walking around with a .38 snubbie in an ankle-holster - while wearing shorts

Maybe is was a garter and it slipped.

I do know a complete bone-head who has a CHL. I am not sure at all how he slipped through the cracks and got one, but he did. Can't think of any particular instance of him blurting out that he was carrying or had a CHL, but then again, I try not to talk to him unless it is absolutley nessecary. I know several CHL holders and he is the only one I can honestly say doesn't need a CHL due to the lack of brain power.

Sometimes the topic of a CHL comes up between folks. Especially in gun stores. Most of the folks I have had this conversation with were not bragging. It was more of a exchange of carry ideas or even weapon choices. Some guys just talk loud...like my brother for instance. He is deaf in one ear and doesn't realize how loud he is talking sometimes.

The few people that know I carry aren't impressed enough with it to brag to anyone and they sure as heck know I don't want anyone knowing I am packing heat. Some folks are actually intimidated by guns and I don't want folks being scared to tell me how they feel. Maybe I need some folks who are impressed by the idea of carrying a gun. Then they could make me out a big shot to anyone that is trapped into listening. :biggrinjester:

Seriously though...I have been fortunate enough to not run into any folks who feel the need to show how tough they are by showing off the weapon they carry.

Guys,

I'm really enjoying these posts-Thanks. I brought up the question because after reading the post about the crazy man who threw wine on a women's car and then screamed I have a CHL and a gun in the house, I wondered are there really crazy people with CHLs? I've assumed, up until now, that all CHL carriers were cool, and bright enough to keep their guns and their plastic in their pockets and their mouths shut about it; but I got curious about what kind of silliness could, and has happened.

I bet there are some bone heads out there that think it makes them a "tough guy". I have just been lucky enough not to meet them.

I met one, he got it because he threatened someone, they told him they feared for their life and showed their legal weapon, cops were called, no one was arrested, but he got a CHL so "It would be a fair fight". I don't know what lead up to the altercation, I don't know his name, I don't want to know his name and hope I never see him again. But that was the only negative, all others are very responsible people.

So far I have not run across any bone-heads, I like most of the others just keep a tight lip about it. There are very few people that know I carry, and like most I prefer it that way. As to the issue of bone-heads with a chl, I am sure that there are some out there, my guess is that they comprise <1% of the total CHL population, and unfortunately they give the rest of us 99% a bad name. I have no illusions that if one of those bone heads were to do something stupid the news media would be on it like white on rice, and I am sure that every CHL holder will be painted with the same brush.
