Moving to Kentucky, unfortunately
Unfortunately, I will be moving to Kentucky. I have a Texas CHL but because I will become a resident of Kentucky for a couple of years, how long will my Texas CHL be valid before I will have to apply for a Kentucky CCDW license? Any suggestions?

If you're in the military, don't you get to name your permanent residence?
Unfortunately? There ain't nothin' pretty about Ft. Hood, IMO. If you're going to Ft. Campbell or Ft. Knox, you might want to stay? Pretty country with four seasons and a few nice people.
Good luck.

If your leave and earning statement (LES) continues to show your Texas home address - then you should have no problem as long as your other identification remains in concurrence with the original Texas address. It is temporary duty (TDY) station until a permanent change of duty station is issued (PCS). But if you change your driver license or vehicle registration to KY, that effectively is a change of address out of state as far as Texas is concerned and the TXCHL will not be valid (IMHO). If you are getting PCS - then your LES will change and you are out of luck. You have to be a resident of KY six months before applying for their concealed carry permit. Of course, a move within TX still requires a 30 day window to change your address so there really is no extended window to carry a TX CHL and produce a KY DL.
In KY, a citizen can have a loaded weapon in the glovebox (narrowly defined) without having a concealed permit/license.
KRS 527.020 - "A deadly weapon shall not be deemed concealed on or about the person if it is located in a glove compartment, regularly installed in a motor vehicle by its manufacturer regardless of whether said compartment is locked, unlocked, or does not have a locking mechanism."
Similar to the Federal statute - the KY definition of "glovebox" does not include a center console whether lockable or not.
A bunch of my bug-eating kinfolk still live in western KY. I really like to visit up there - but am real glad IH 30 points back to Texas.

As stated, if you are in military and keep your address as Texas, then you continue to have a resident CHL. However, if you change your address to a KY residence, then you just need to update the Texas CHL with your new address and it becomes a Texas non-resident CHL. You will still be able to carry on it as Kentucky honors Texas non-resident CHL's. Just follow the Kentucky laws for a CHL holder. Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it. Yes, my LES has Texas as my home of record. It will all work out well.
