Processing of new CHL apps vs. Renewal apps

Here's a question I have not seen or heard discussed. I have just renewed my CHL and am waiting for it to arrive in the mail. When I check the status it says "Processing Application".

The other day I wondered if the applications for new and renewed licenses are all lumped in together or are they handled seperately. IE new license apps go this a way and renewal apps go that away.

Anyone got any thoughts on that?

I just went through renewal class last weekend. The instructor told us that renewals are handled first. That was his story anyways. He said on average, renewals were taking 45-60 days to process and new apps were taking as long as 6 months to complete.

I have no way to know if these times are true, just what was told to us in class.

Thanks for the reply. I'll let you know when mine gets in and maybe you can do the same. Good luck to us. :thumbs2:

I can testify to the 6 months to complete statement, that's almost exactly how long it took for me to get my plastic, and that was with no errors.

Steve, was your app for a new license or for a renewal?

Thanks for the reply Steve. Happy you FINALLY did get your license. I know, it's an agonizing wait but I believe it's worth it.
Onward and upward. :cheers2:

My renewal app was listed as processing in December '08 (mailed approx. 1 week prior). Showed completed in about 50 days.

It was well worth the wait, I carry every where I go now, before i got my plastic i would carry in my car under the mpa, but I was always uneasy about leaving a gun in my car when I went some where; the last thing I wanted was to have someone break into the car and find my gun. Thankfully that's not a problem any more :clapping:

How far in advance can you do your renewal? Mine does'nt expire 'til 2010 Jeez from the way it sounds I better start now. When I first got it only took 45 days.

You may go through the renewal at any time within 6 months the expiration date of your current licens but no sooner. The way things are going these day it is a good idea to do it as early as possible. For example: If your birthday is on December 30th you should have your packet in Austin as shortly after June 30th as you can. You don't want your current to expire before you receive your renewal. ;-)
