Texas Self-Defense & Deadly Force Law Seminar + CHL Renewal

I'm presenting the
Texas Self-Defense & Deadly Force Law Seminar at the First Baptist Church - Friendswood, 111 E. Heritage Dr., Friendswood, TX on Friday, January 16, 2009 from 6:00pm until 9:00pm. The is the same presentation I use in my initial (10 hr.) CHL classes and I am doing the rest of the initial CHL class the next day, Saturday, Jan. 17th. The Saturday class will be at PSC.
A large percentage of the people who attend this seminar are CHLs. I've decided follow up this seminar with the rest of the CHL renewal material so people can get their renewal out of the way. This 3 hour seminar is a little longer than the time I spend on this subject in 4 hour CHL renewal classes, so the class will be closer to 5 hrs than 4. For seminar attendees that are coming up on renewal, there is no reason to sit through the seminar, then hear much of the same information only a few weeks or months later. The remainder of the CHL rewewal will be on Sunday, Jan. 18th from 1:00pm until 3:00pm.
I know someone will ask, so if you are wondering if you can take a renewal class now, here is the rule on timing. The training certificate you get after you take a renewal class is only good for 6 months. Therefore, you must send in your renewal application no later than 6 months after taking the class. DPS sends out renewal notices 6 months before expiration, so in theory you could take the class up to one year before your CHL expires. That, however, is pushing it way too close! It's up to you how early you take it, but 6 months just doesn't give you enough time to complete the online renewal application and send it in.
I have sent an email to DPS to see how early they will accept a "manual" application using one of the packets Instructors can provide. Using one of my packets instead of applying online may open the window a bit. I'll post the answer.
If you would like to attend the seminar and/or either the initial (10 hr) CHL class or the renewal CHL class, please email me at
Charles@TexasShooting.com. The seminar is free, the initial (10hr) CHL class is $125, and the renewal CHL class is $85.
Seating for the CHL classes is limited, but there is no limit on the seminar. We'll never fill up the church for the seminar; at least I don't think we will!

What are the costs for renewal for Veterans?

Veterans get a 50% in the initial license fee and renewals. So the State renewal fee for veterans is $35.

Famous last words.
This is an excellent seminar, folks, and something you cannot find anywhere else, period, no matter what you're willing to pay. No one in Texas has the unique combination of qualifications that Charles brings to this discussion. And having this at the start of the 2009 Texas Legislative session will undoubtedly provide you with insight as to what notable bills are on the table.
I've attended three versions of his
Texas Self-Defense & Deadly Force Law Seminar over the past few years, and I strongly encourage anyone who carries a gun to attend. I really do think it is that important.

I'd love to come, but there's no way we'll be able to make it down that far south (we have animals that need constant attention, especially our dairy cows that need milking twice a day).
If you're ever interested in giving a seminar in East Texas, around Tyler or thereabouts, I'd be happy to help make the arrangements and find a venue.

Thanks to the newly formed Texas CHL Forum, Inc., we'll be doing just that.

I will certainly attend in DFW as well. If it was a bit nicer time of the year, I'd ride down to Houston but it's just too dicey what the weather will be like for motorcycle trips in January.

Yeah, I'd be down to take a ride there as well if the weather was a lot nicer.

OK, on the Friday night seminar (January 16, 2009 from 6:00pm until 9:00pm. ) what will this be covering ? I just took a CHL class the first week of December (Estep class), and I would like to come, if it just not a repeat of a standard CHL class..
Also, IF it is free, do you need a head count ? OR just show up ?

Hi Bat,
Congradulations, on your class. I am also an Estap alumni. Tom runs one of the the most informative and interesting classes in the state. The 10 + hours we spend with him is barely enough to scratch the surface. Tom's Job as CHL instructor is primarily to communicate the information the state of Texas requires. Charles' class is about deadly force and self defence law, not only about the law itself but how it realistically applies. He debunks a lot of so called conventional wisdom. Most of us leave his seminar amazed about things we thought we knew.
Charles lectures from a unique position, he is responsible for actually writing much CHL self defense deadly force laws over the last several years. He is the expert. But he actually presents some complex legal principles in such a way that even this thick headed Yankee was able to understand and hang onto.
Good Luck.
