I know the real bad guys have known about these for awhile, but the amateurs now have another thing brought to their attention.

Do you feel this article is irresponsible and alerting the amateurs a new method which will increase burglaries, good reporting and informing the general public of the vulnerability, or won't make a difference?

The people who are most likely to try this (teenage idiots) can already find it on YouTube.

You tube, as seamus said, would be a better eduational service for these types. As a teacher, I find that many of the criminally-inclined are too lazy to read.

Bump keying isn't anything new, and it's not as easy to do as the news makes it seem. It does take some practice to figure out how to do it just right, but once you do figure it out, it's pretty easy to replicate.

Masterlock has an awesome lock called Nightwatch, that disables the exterior lock at nighttime:

You can also get "bump proof" locks (Which really arent, they just use odd keys that can't be copied, and are very expensive) like these:

It really doesn’t say anything that’s not already out on the net, it might raise awareness, but in this day and age I do not believe security exists of any value other than deterring idiots and the curious.

I don’t worry about bump keys because as soon as any one smart enough to have see's an expensive lock, out comes the cordless tools.

Story is being re-run. Was all over the news earlier this year.

Still easier to just break a window and hop in.

While info on bumping is easy enough to find, advertising it further may have some interesting effects.

More Criminals may get interested in bumping... but more homeowners may get interested in getting a bump-resistant/proof lock.

I don't think it matters...those that want in are gonna get in and those that would use something like that probably already know or have one.

By the way 90% of all homes doors only have a tiny strip of wood holding the door!
