... In speaking with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), I am told that the CHL Bureau is about 15-30 days behind in processing original CHL applications and 10-15 days behind in processing CHL renewal applications. The standard 60-day processing time for both original and renewal CHL applications is now currently running at about 90-day processing time. This backlog is due to a 40% increase in applications since late 2007. To help remedy this backlog, the CHL Bureau has hired temporary employees and is working employees on overtime schedules ...

My CHL is not due for renewal until April of next year. With everything I have been reading about delays, I sent DPS a very friendly e-mail asking when I should start the processing times because I know they have been swamped.

It took 3 weeks to get a reply from the e-mail.

In one sentence, the reply read: "Allow 180 days for processing." :eek6

That is seriously wrong in so many ways. It doesn't matter how busy they are. Six months to process a CHL application is unacceptable.

ETA: After several calls to DPS and "we can't find it being received in the system", I tracked the money order down on moneygram's website and their automated service said it had been cashed by DPS on 7/16/08...India can find information faster on DPS than DPS can.... should we outsource this to India too??
