Frankie, there has been one report of a gun snatching. Unfortunately, it was done illegally by the police. The account is below.

My gun was snatched at gunpoint by about 10 armed men in Wal Mart parking lot in broad daylight... all members of the Andalusia City Police Department. Then I was "kidnapped" and held against my will until someone was able to pay my ransom, in the form of bail, at the tune of about 1500 bucks. (Charges were all eventually dropped, weapon and permit returned)

Don't know about the legality of OC in your area... and it's technically legal here in Alabama... but you do it in an urban area here... you go to jail! Just my experience

Yes, and one respondent added that I was "stupid" and that he "hates" people like me.

Another couldn't resist adding that I was an "idiot" who "knows it all". (He subsequently edited his post to delete the "idiot" reference.)

Still another says he carries in an urban area with around 1 million people in it. He keeps his head "on a swivel", and has a very broad definition of what would constitute threatening behavior. That sure sounds relaxing.

Another was an LEO who claimed to carry openly for 14 years and who never had a badge showing. I think he was a part time deputy sherrif who lived in a small cabin halfway between Buffalo Hair, MT and Dustwater, ID. But whoever he was, he sounded pretty cool.

And another "cleverly" related how police in Alabama (technically an open carry state according to the law and in the minds of the opencarry.org people) treat people who are carrying openly in the city. Apparently, they arrest them and toss 'em in jail. Later on, they end up having to let them go. Kinda makes you feel like an undersized trout or bass, hey?

And me? Well, this stupid idiot carries concealed pretty much everywhere he goes (where it is legal) and remains cool, calm, and collected the whole time. No one attempts to snatch his gun. No cops have ever taken him down at gunpoint while exercising their ignorance of the law. And if anyrhing goes down in his presence where having a gun would be a benefit, he will be sure to have tactical surprise.

In my book, that's not bad for a stupid idiot.

I would open carry occasionally, but mostly in non-public situations.

It is irritating to me that it is not legal within the letter of the law to go to my father's house and show him my new carry pistol.

It would be awful nice to be able to legally go help my brother bale hay or put in fence posts at his ranch without sweating inside a cover garment.

I'd enjoy spending a day at the lake on a boat or hang out on the lake front and enjoy myself without sweating through a cover garment on a hot day or worrying about whether my shirt is blowing open every other second.

For the most part, I would still carry concealed, but I can think of many more instances such as those mentioned above where open carry would make life much easier.

He mentioned New Hampshire specificially, which is the only OC state I've actually stopped in for anything longer than gas and food, and in the week I spent there in 2006, I saw at least two or three dozen people open carrying. Granted, this was in Lancaster, not Nashua, and some of them were hiking. Others were shopping, or just hanging around the campground.
Lancaster is a small town with a population of around 4000. I wouldn't characterize it as an urban center.

I lived in New England for 50 years and visited NH dozens of times. I've never seen a living soul carrying openly. But I believe your report anyway. I can see that in the smaller towns there might be people OC'ing.

I have seen a video of a person in either Nashua or Manchester (don't remember which) being harrassed by the police because he was openly carrying. My guess is that it is not too common in the larger cities. Otherwise, the police would be more familiar with the law.
I open carried a few times in Massachusetts. Open or concealed carry there was legal long before it was legal here.

I'm not sure you would be illegal on your Dad's or brother's property. (because of the family connection).

But I agree with your scenarios and reasons 100%. That's why I would favor a change to TX law to allow for open carry.

So have I, but only at gun clubs.

I'm sure you were in the countryside somewhere. I know that if you do it anywhere in an urban area, you're gonna get thrown in jail. MA might have a hunting/target shooting exemption, but that's it as far as I know.

I am very skeptical of the guy in Ohio who claims that he and many of his friends open carry in Toledo "all the time". Check this out for the status of open carry in Ohio.

http://www.ohioccw.org/component/option ... /catid,29/

It seems that the state Supreme Court ruled that open carry is a right, but DID NOT OVERTURN THE NUMEROUS LOCAL ORDINANCES BANNING IT. So many cities and towns ban open carry, and anyone doing it is likely to be arrested and convicted at the local level. The site urges people contemplating open carry to consult their lawyer first.

I'll bet you could hang out in downtown Toledo for a month and never see a living soul open carrying.

For some reason, when discussing open carry it seems difficult to seperate fantasy from reality.

I think a lot of you missed my point about doing away with the 30.06 signs. It's not that I don't want a way to insure that a sign barring entrance by a CHLer is legal and visible.

I would rather that there were no legal way to be barred from carrying, anywhere, at all.

But, like I said, I'm a purist.

Good morning Frankie,

In reply, let me say/repeat: I am not responsible for the comments of others, I have no influence on what is posted at OpenCarry.org

As I stated before, I am simply trying to gather information that may rebut your previous posts, or perhaps even support them. We will see.

You have repeatedly asked for evidence of persons OCing in urban environments, I am trying to fulfill that request. I am trying to do so in a respectful manner, and have provided you with this link so that you can go there yourself with your concerns.

HERE

frankie_the_yankee wrote:
If nobody's doing it, it's no surprise that nobody's getting snatched. Show me some place where people are doing it.

To which I reply, "You can't find non-LEO's who carry openly in urban areas."

I have found open carry to be very rare. This goes double in urban areas.

The problem is that there are no urban areas in the USA where open carry by non-LEO's is practiced by any significant number of people. (What I would call significant is > 1%.)

But when you or others tell me that snatching is not a problem in urban areas because we never hear of it, I must point out that the argument is a red herring. The reason we never hear of it is because almost no one carrys openly in urban areas. I've travelled pretty extensively and I've only seen two people (not counting myself) carrying openly who were not LEO. One was in a shopping mall in Phoenix around 8 or 9 years ago. The other was in Brattleboro, VT around 30 years ago. (Note that Brattleboro is not exactly an urban area.)

So I'm still waiting for someone to tell me how many non-LEO's they have seen openly carrying in urban environments, or to admit that practically no one does it.

The reason examples of "snatching" from non-LEO's are hard to come by is because very few of them are stupid enough to carry openly in the wide variety of places where there would be a significant risk.

Because most people are endowed with good sense, the number of people (non-LEO's) carrying openly in crowded, urban environments is minimal. So there is little data available.

You're asking me to show you cases, and you can't even show me where people are doing it. If no one's doing it, there won't be any cases.

Go walk the streets in Alexandria, VA for instance. I have, as recently as last summer. Count up how many people you see going about their business carrying openly. On a week long trip to VA, I never saw even ONE.

frankie_the_yankee wrote:
But either way, you would still need a pretty big sample to see anything.

On this point we agree. An in depth and meaningful study of this matter would require years of research (and a large polling base) to achieve any level of accuracy. Clearly, no one has chosen to pursue such a task… or we would already have our answers.

In lieu of such a study…all I can do is provide you with the results of the poll (at the end of 30 days).

If you provide no other documentation of your own, then I will simply tally the number of people who stated they carry in urban areas and have experienced no problems, then divide it by the number who have.

I recognize this poll will be imperfect, but the purpose for it is to note the experiences of other’s and compare it to yours. The pretense seems to be that because YOU have not witnessed OC in urban areas… it does not exist (or only in small numbers by people lacking common sense). We will simply see what the folks have to say, that is all I can do.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Flint.

Hi Flint,

I thought you might be interested in what I found when perusing Toledo's city ordinances.

549.18. Weapon possession in public places prohibited.
(a) No person, in and about the streets, alleys or other public places of the City, or at any place other than the residence or fixed place of business of such person, or while on a suitable firing range, or while being used for lawful hunting, or while unloaded at a public firearms display, show or exhibition, shall be in possession of; carry or have on or about his person, any pistol, revolver, rifle, shotgun or any weapon, by whatever name known, which is designed to expel a projectile or projectiles by the action of expanding gases, or any bowie knife, dirk, blackjack, billyclub, brass knuckles or any other weapon capable of inflicting bodily harm.

(b) Whoever violates this section is guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree

(1952 Code § 17-13-121; Ords. 919-73, 122-74)

Basically, it seems that Toledo bans the carrying of firearms in all public places.

Obviously, Ohio's new concealed handgun license law supercedes this. (Ohio recently passed statewide pre-emption.) But the CHL law does not mention open carry. So while concealed carry is OK per state law, it looks like open carry is illegal in Toledo.

Here's the link.

http://www.amlegal.com/nxt/gateway.dll/ ... :toledo_oh

So I would say that the Toledo-based open carry guy and his imaginary open carry play friends are out to lunch.

The answer may be easily found if you just over there and ask him, right?

It seems a bit disingenuous to stay over here and question the good faith postings of another person on another forum.

You have already "discounted" the testimony of several of their members based on nothing more than you just don't believe them.

If you have questions...or have reason to suspect the validity of any of their posts, go there and ask them. Simple.

I doubt you would appreciate them questioning YOUR integrity.

And BTW, I would be the first to defend you on that matter, the same as for them.

you should just refer him to this site we have numerous thread where members keep accounts of their daily activities while open carrying in what are considered to be urban areas and not having their "guns snatched" such as

I've already read those threads. They mostly deal with people OC'ing in VA. Each "sortie" is described almost as if it were an adventure of some sort.

No snatch attempts.

I notice they recount lots of  reactions among the sheeple. So I get the impression that even in VA, OC'ing is quite rare in urban areas.

I don't carry a gun to amuse myself. When I leave the house with a gun, it's not for "adventure". I carry for protection. That's all.

But what do you think of the Toledo guy who claims to OC all the time, when it is obviously illegal per the ordinance I quoted and linked to?
