I love dogs like the next guy, but that would've been one dead mongrel...no doubt about it. And after I shot it, I would've explained to the distraught owner why I did so....apologizing for doing it, but making it very clear that I was justified to do so. I would take the dog out 100 out of 100 times in this scenario.
