What a waste of time. I see no value in pointing this out. If anything, they probably spread more misunderstanding than anything else.

From what I understand, this is supposed to be an add on charge in the event a crime is committed in or near a school.

I'm sure the local gang members appreciated the reminder and promptly placed their illegally obtained firearm in a locked safe to keep then away from children.

It's nothing more that city government promoting the anti-gun agenda under the guise of doing a "Public Service".

I'm sure they don't tell the complete story, they only inform of you of the laws that would discourage law abiding citizens from being armed, not the ones that support your rights to arm yourself with and carry a firearm for self defense.

At least in the video and article, I also don't see them saying that if you live within the GFSZ you can legally possess a gun. IMHO, they are trying to scare people into telling on their neighbors that they know own guns or if they do themselves to get rid of them for fear of violating the GFSZA.

I think most of you are missing the point. Those calling it a waste of time are falsely assuming the objective was to inform people of the law, and if it was it would be a stupid and absurd waste of time and resources. It wasn't. It was purely political. This was an anti-gun propaganda exercise. Let's look at who orchestrated this little event:

US Attorney:

On June 27, 2013, President Obama nominated Polite to be United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana for a term of four years, the office having been vacated by Jim Letten, who resigned on December 11, 2012.

ATF Agent Constance Hester:

Imagine Harvey Johnson Jr.’s surprise. On Tuesday, Jackson Mississippi’s mayor announced that crime in the southern city had fallen 6.7 percent year over year. Violent crime fell a whopping 27.3 percent. Good news, right? Not if you’re with The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives . . .

Just one day later, ATF special agent Constance Hester-Davis stepped up to the proverbial microphone. Due to the increase in crime in Jackson, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives decided to embed a federal agent with the Jackson Police Department. “With the spike of increase in crime in this area, we knew that something had to be done . . . ”

When reporters asked special agent Heter-Davis to repeat her justification for the action, the mayor had trouble containing himself: “Before, we were concentrating our efforts . . . all over various counties in this area, but because this is now a hotspot, we’re focusing all efforts here in Jackson.”

Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman:

Another machine Democrat, complete with article after article about corruption (at his jail) and incompetence.

Prior to his election as Sheriff, he served as the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the highest appointed city official and chief financial officer, of the City of New Orleans in the administration of Mayor Marc H. Morial. In his first bid for public office in 2000, he was elected to fill the City Council District "D" seat, and he was re-elected in 2002. While on the City Council, he served as Chairman of the Council's Budget, Audit and Board of Review Committee, and the Governmental Affairs Committee; as well as a member of the City Park Improvement Association and the Sewerage & Water Board.

On the witness stand last week, the sheriff - once a top aide to Mayor Marc Morial - revealed a decidedly indifferent attitude toward a raft of reports detailing major, even life-threatening problems inside a jail facility comprised of a handful of buildings and temporary tents.

He testified that he never read them.

Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman had said he'd attend a Friday (July 10) meeting called by City Council members who want to know how he's spent his entire budget halfway through the year, requiring nearly $30 million more to keep the jail running through December.

But Gusman never showed. Instead, he sent his lawyer.

JALLEN is referring to this exception to the Federal Gun Free Safe School Zones Act.

(A) It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm that has moved in or that otherwise affects interstate or foreign commerce at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.
(B) Subparagraph (A) does not apply to the possession of a firearm—
(i) on private property not part of school grounds;
(ii) if the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do so by the State in which the school zone is located or a political subdivision of the State, and the law of the State or political subdivision requires that, before an individual obtains such a license, the law enforcement authorities of the State or political subdivision verify that the individual is qualified under law to receive the license;
(iii) that is—
(I) not loaded; and
(II) in a locked container, or a locked firearms rack that is on a motor vehicle;
(iv) by an individual for use in a program approved by a school in the school zone;
(v) by an individual in accordance with a contract entered into between a school in the school zone and the individual or an employer of the individual;
(vi) by a law enforcement officer acting in his or her official capacity; or
(vii) that is unloaded and is possessed by an individual while traversing school premises for the purpose of gaining access to public or private lands open to hunting, if the entry on school premises is authorized by school authorities.
