Two Reported Dead in Mall Shooting

My heart sinks when I hear news such as this. Our society has gone down the toilet and life is nolonger valued or cherished. I can only hope this incident will change the minds of some, if not all anti's about gun control. "Outlaw guns, then only outlaws will have guns". My thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this senseless crime.

Thats all I've heard so far...Anyone seen what it is that the shooter actually used???

I know its petty, and possibly not a real issue, but I am checking off on my list of "inevitables" that I use to keep track of how these incidents are portrayed...

EDIT: It has been posted in the media that it was an SKS. Apparently he had shown his landlord a Russian SKS, but she thought it was too old to even work. Not sure if it was the same one, or a different one. They did say it had a large clip.

I was at Cabella's yesterday and they had 20 SKS with bayonet for $200. So getting one would have been pretty easy....

According to some of the posters on another forum that live in that area, yes, the mall is posted. I will post confirmation when I find it.

They were in very good shape and the bayonet was new, attached and it folds under the stock for storage.

It probably didn't matter in this case. Maybe 1% of the population have a CHL or equivalent, and fewer carry regularly.

There's always a chance that an armed plainchlothes LEO will be present, or even an armed criminal, but they are rarely in the right place at the right time.

Abstract:

Few events obtain the same instant worldwide news coverage as multiple victim public shootings. These crimes allow us to study the alternative methods used to kill a large number of people (e.g., shootings versus bombings), marginal deterrence and the severity of the crime, substitutability of penalties, private versus public methods of deterrence and incapacitation, and whether attacks produce copycats. Yet, economists have not studied this phenomenon. Our results are surprising and dramatic. While arrest or conviction rates and the death penalty reduce normal murder rates, our results find that the only policy factor to influence multiple victim public shootings is the passage of concealed handgun laws. We explain why public shootings are more sensitive than other violent crimes to concealed handguns, why the laws reduce both the number of shootings as well as their severity, and why other penalties like executions have differential deterrent effects depending upon the type of murder.

Like any other human effort, CCW is not perfect. But things could be far worse.

None of the media coverage I’ve read mentioned that the mall where this happened was, like Virginia Tech, a "gun-free zone.�

Surely, with all the reporters who appear at these crime scenes and seemingly interview virtually everyone there, why didn't one simply mention the signs that ban guns from the premises?

Nebraska allows people to carry permitted concealed handguns, but it allows property owners, such as the Westroads Mall, to post signs banning permit holders from legally carrying guns on their property.

If I had been in that mall and had to leave my pistol in the car I believe I could sue the mall for, after stripping me of my right to defend myself, failure to protect me.

it was a "gun free" zone... or a criminals welcome zone.

In NE the signs are not required to be specific like the 30.06 postings, a simple firearm with the slash through it would be legal.

Yet another attack occurred in a gun-free zone.
