Re: Will you change How you carry after Sept 1.
The fact that the law now clearly only applies to displaying your handgun in a PUBLIC place, it will change how I carry in a small and select number of cases. If I know I'm only going over to a friend's house, I'm liable to carry as big a gun as I feel like, use an OWB holster, throw a Hawaiian shirt over it, and then take the shirt off when I get there. Same thing in the winter when I can take off an overcoat at a friend's place with no worries. It was a modicum of common sense that that wouldn't have really been a practical problem in the past, but it's unambiguous legality makes it very nice on those occasions when I know I won't be milling about the general public.

Any one else going to change how they carry after Sept 1st?Senate Bill 299 adds a more clear meaning for “intentional failure to conceal” and protects against charges of unlawful carry for the inadvertent or accidental display of a handgun.
I'm curious why someone would think they could carry any differently. Just about everything I've seem posted was fine before, as it'll be fine now. If someone was extra paranoid the change might change their personal thinking, but it doesn't change carry.

" Displays.......in the plain view of another person" constitutes open carry.
Therefore open carry is still illegal in Texas as of tomorrow morning.
"Intentionally fails to conceal" was simply intended to proscribe open carry in the first place.
To that extent " intentionally fails to conceal " has now been clarified to mean open carry.

Re: Will you change How you carry after Sept 1.
Big portions of deciding to carry or not carrying involve people's comfort level. Be it fear of the law or fear of wives and family. Here we're only dealing with the law I suppose. We get all kinds of posts about it. "Do you think I can do this?" "Is this okay or stupid?" We also get plenty of posts about people saying that they just can't bring themselves to carry anything but pocket carry.
I am very diligent about my carry. I do not believe that I am careless in any way. That said, from the LCP (hate it, but it fills a niche) to the G26 to the G17, my comfort level decreases as the frame size increases. I think that this will absolutely have a positive effect on my comfort level. And that comfort level will encourage me to carry my G17 much more often when I might have carried the G26 before. I enjoy the 26 but love the 17. It isn't going to change how I carry (Comp-Tac MTAC slide), but it certainly will change my "go-to" pistol, the regularity of "what" I carry.
While being responsible, I hope that the change encourages more and more folks to carry and more folks to carry their version of full size.

Will me. Normal carry is small frame IWB or OWB; Medium frame IWB. i'll now carry IWB large frame (PT92) and have been since Friday to get acclimated. Will probably carry OWB more often with small and medium frame and un-tucked shirt. Still circumspect, but less worried.

Not one bit. It's still illegal while hiking on public land and I never worried about concealing inside friends' houses or on the family ranch anyway.docbrazos wrote:All the years I've had my Texas CHL ( since Day 1) I've busted tail to conceal my handgun. What's illegal while hiking on public land? Are you referring to open carry?nightmare wrote: It's still illegal while hiking on public land

Pecos:
I picked up the Safariland 5181 today. I really like it. Comfortable and, like you said, it rides high and close to the body allowing for rather easy concealment. Thanks for mentioning it on here!

No, it will not change the way I carry. We must conceal and be conscious of it, it is our responsibility. I believe this law just gives us some protection on those occasions when innocent human errors happen.
If you carry a gun, people call you paranoid. Nonsense! If you carry a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about?

Re: Will you change How you carry after Sept 1.
I have to agree with most others, why change. Until I moved back to Texas a few years ago I carried for almost 10 years in a state that allowed open carry. Very rarely did; mostly walking dog in state forest or bow hunting and not that often then. I wanted my gun to remain hidden. Still do

You may want to reread the thread. Nobody intentionally displayed their weapon. The arresting officer Nick Atkinson, Round Rock PD was indeed ignorant of the law. No change for me after Sept 1st.
